The Council held its quarterly meeting - on Wednesday when were present Messrs. JT. .Mackersay (chairman), Warren, McHardy, "Nf Crosse and Hunter. \ The minutes ,of previous meetings of v,> Finance Committee werereadand confirmed.

The chairman explained that a minuto increasing the salary of the clerk to .£3OO was not really an increase of £100, but added tho salary of road inspector, which office was also held by the clerk. Some remarks were made on the neglect of the County auditor in not attending to audit the accounts, and the clerk was understood to say that none of tho. Road Board accounts had been audited. .

. A mass of routine letters were laid on the table, all of which had been attended to by the Chairman. Letters were read from Mr John Towers, Makatoku, Mr Lloyd, and Mr Carr, Napier, applying for the supervision of the erection, of the Tamumu bridge, the latter's terms would be 2 J per cent, on cost. . —On the motion of Messrs -McHardy and Crosse, Mr Carr was appointed. Mr" John "'Speedy, Wainui, made his customary appeal for a road, through Mr Herbert's land and offering £20 towards the cost.—Mr Crosse said it would only be a by-road when done and had nothing to do with the country, and he did not require it. These applications had been going on for seven years and ho thought the Council should definitely decline it.—Mr McHardy thought it was Road Board work, as also did the Chairman, who suggested that it should be referred to the Road Board.
