WELLINGTON NEWS.
» . ■ [SPECIAL TO DAILY TELEOEAPn.] [OWN COEBESrONDENT. —BY TELEGKAPH.] Wellington, Last night. The Manawatu Railway Company's land sale to-day was a groat success. There was a large attendance, keen competition, and good prices. A considerable number of members of Parliament residing in the South Island have urged the Government not to call Parliament together during April, as it will be very inconvenient for them to attend earlier than May, by which time all the harvest operations will have been completed. The Government have not yet fixed the date.
Some time ago the Waieti contract of the . North Island main trunk railway was let to Messrs White and Lovett, Auckland, the contract price being something over £53,000. The contractors have since declined to take up the work, and the next highest tenderers,.. Messrs J. and A. .Anderson, Christehurch, will now receive the contract. Messrs White. and Lovett will j forfeit their deposit, which amounts to several hundred pounds. The Post tells the following .story of Bishop Cowie, of Auckland :-r—A certain* Episcopal member of the Senate of-the New Zealand University rarely wears tho gaiters or apron as a portion of his ordinary costume, Ids head gear alone indicating his professional rank. Regarding this peculiarity a gpod story is in circulation, and is indeed told by the Bishop himself. He has during his stay in Wellington taken \vp his quarters at the Hutt, and a, gentleman there, wishing to call upon him, made enquiries as to where he was staying. The person interrogated.—a railway official—declared he had not seen any Bishop, but after His Lordship had been described, the official brightened up and said, " Oh, yes; I saw him in the last train, but he had nothing on but his hat!" . •
