WAIPAWA.

[own coeeespondent.J

This day. Tho return match between the Makatoku and Waipawa clubs will take place on the Waipawa ground to-morrow. In my report of the recent meeting of our Town Board I stated that Messrs Rathbono and Britten's claims of £300 and £350 respectively as compensation for 40 chains of road, giving access to and increasing the value of their properties, was dealt with in committee, when " nothing was done." I

gave the reply I received to my enquiry, but it has now transpired that the committee passed the following resolution:—"That the clerk be instructed to acknowledge the receipt of Messrs Rathbone's and Britten's letters re compensation, and to assure them that the Board is willing to pay compeiisar tion at a fair rate for land tufon, but -would suggest that the matter be referred to arbitrators," Jt is believed outside that the high rate of compensation claimed is to practically demonstrate how much in the opinion of some members of the body politic the properties in the middle of the town are undervalued, with a view to reform in the forthcoming annual valuation,

A meeting of members of the Waipukarau Jockey Club was hold on Tuesday evening last at the Tavistock Hotel, Mr Geo. Hunter presiding. The annual report and balance sheet having been adopted, a discussion took place on a formal test motion by Mr Gilbertson, hon. sec, for winding up the club, which was lost.
