SECOND EDITION.

From the " Australian Trading World " we learn that the ship Northumberland from Napier, arrived at London on September 6. The departure from London for Napier of the ship Asterion on September 3, is also notified in the same paper. Dr. Koyworth has settled in Nelson, and commenced the practice of bis profession there. To the Editor: Sir,—Would you kindly allow me space to explain that in making the mistake regarding Sir George Whitmore being a member of tho Ministry, I for tho moment forgot that when the Cabinet was reformed Sir George Whitmore was not included in it, but was mado " Commander of the Forces" instead.—lam, &c, J. T. Maheyat Hornsby. The enquiry into Sergeant O'Grady's case commenced to-day before Mr G. A. Preece, with closed doors. Mr Preece will hear the evidence, make his report, and forward it to Wellington for the decision of the head of the Department. Professor Calon's concert takes place next Friday, when a capital programme will be submitted. One or two good choruses will bo given, including two from tho " Stabat Mater" and "Trovatore". Many of our well-known amateurs will take part in the t:oncort, one item being tho playing of six pianos by twelve young lady players. "Civis," in the Otago|Daily Times, gives tho following transcription of a boy's essay :—" Sometimes the tiger when unted springs upon the eloughent and fastens his teeth and clors in his neck or shoulder. The latter trys to kneel on the enie (enemy ?) so as to crush him by tho wait off his great lags and heavy bottom." It is a common thing for popular orators in the colonies to speak of tho wool industry as a temporary and declining industry. It is always a safe draw to speak of sheep giving place to men,—as if the two were necessarily antagonistic,—and an ultra-radical goldfiolds Member once brought down the houso at a political meeting by speaking enthusiastically of tho rabbits and expressing a hope that he would live to wallow in the blood of tho last squatter. Facts however, are more convincing,—though, perhaps, less thrilling,—than figures of speech ; and it may tend to correct a popular error to mention that since 1831 tho Australasian colonies have exported wool of tho value of £344,000,000, whilst all the gold yet found in Australasia has not reached £300,000,000. Wednesday's Post writes: —Iv the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon an action was brought by George Bedford against Messrs Levin & Co., shipowners, for tho recovery of £30 damages. The plaintiff alloged that on the 11th October he booked as a passenger by the s.s Kiwi to Napier, taking with him certain merchandise which ho intended to disposo of at the Napier Agricultural Show. Tho vessel was advertised to leave this port on the 11th, but did not actually start until 6.30 p.m. on the following day. Consequently the plaintiff did not reach Napier until it" was too late for the show, and he therefore claimed £15 as damages for the profit which he expected to havo mado by his Napier venture, and £15 for travelling expenses incurred. Mr Jellicoo appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Gully for defendant. The claimant was examined, and the further hearing of the case was postponed until Thursday. Labouchere says:—A remarkable story as to the manner in which the ratification of tho union between England and Ireland was extorted from tho Irish Parliament was often told by Lord Cardwell, who heard it from tho lute Sir Robert Peel, and I havo never seen it in print. Lord Castlereagh was in treaty with an influential member of the Irish Parliament for his vote, which was to carry several others with it, and terms had been settled, when the legislator was seized with a dangerous illness, and, repenting of his iniquities when he thought himself on his death-bed, ho requested an interview with his Lordship on his recovery, when ho announced that the negotiations were at an end, that he bitterly repented his part in them, and that he would take an early opportunity of divulging tho whole story to the House. "As you plense," calmly replied Lord Castlereagh, " but if you do, I shall give j'ou the lie direct on the instant, and the next morning I shall shoot you." This is an instructive little anecdote, and throws a flood of light on the public morality of Tory statesmen.
