WAIPAWA.

(feom otjb own coeeespondent.) November G. ; Tho following is an abstract of the business done at the County Council meeting :— Tho Ormondvillo Road Board asked for a grant of £100 as a subsidy, but the matter was loft over till the financial position had been determined.

The Road Overseer's report was an unusually full and extensive document, and its consideration was also postponed for the reason mentioned, with the exception of two matters: Ho was instructed. to try to arrange with tho various local bodies near Woodvillo to open certain quarries at their joint expense; and the clerk was directed

to inform the Hampden Road Board declining to sanction a deviation on tho road from Guavas to Hamp-"on-Waipawa road. Another deviation camo up by Mr Hall's laying on the table a proposed deviation on Harding's road, and moved that the overseer report on it. Mr Carlile made a strong speech in favor while seconding tho motion. Mr Carlilo then wished to move that the Colonial Socrotary bo informed that Waipawa riding did not require a sooond mem- ' her as passed at last meeting. No one offered to second it, and tho chairman ruled ■ it out of order. Later on Mr Carlile gave notico of motion for next mooting that tho ■ • former resolution bo rescinded, and that > in tho opinion of this Council no increase was -< required; also to rescind a resolution that Council meetings bo held at Waipawa, and ' that in future they should meet in Danevirko.'. Tho chairman (Mr Smith) gave it as his opinion that the Governor had spent his power, tho matter resting with tho Council, which could only ciporate in tho front of a gonoral election.

Mr Cariilo brought up another matter, pointing out that tho basis of the county subsidy was the rates levied by the Road Boards and not tho county. The Boards did not all levy the highest rates, consequently thoso who did would bo placed at a disadvantage, and movod that the attention of the chairmen of Road Boards be directed to this mattor, with a view of equalising thorn. The chairman did not think it Was possible to strike a seoond rate within tho year, and ultimately it was resolved to take counsel's opinion on the subject. Mr Moody, from the Public Works department, Woodvillo, attended to explain tho intentions of Government respecting the widening tho road to the station. Tho Engiiioor-in-Chief had decided to abandon tho former scheme, which projoctod cutting a piece of the hillside, the Government pitying £400 (or two-thirds of tho cost). Instead of this they proposed-shifting tho railway lino a distance of ten feet back, by which plan a roadway of fifty feet would bo obtained. Tho cost of shifting tho lino and fenco would bo'borne by Government, and £100 paid to tho county towards tho road work. This sohemo would cost tho Council about tho same as the former, Upon receipt of a resolution cancelling tho former agreement and ndojititig tho proposal of tho Government tho work would be undertaken at onco. On tho motion of Mr Bibby, such a resolution was passed accordingly, mid tho clerk instructed to apply at onco for tho £100.

j Mr Fqnnell, who had undertaken the collection of rates in Woodvillo Riding, forwarded an account for commission ou rates collected and which included some account books and stationery; his account was passed subject to deduction of these items. Tho pay-shoot was then passod, with tho cxeoption of £313 for tho Mangawaihiki bridge, which was held over till after tho mooting of tho joiut committee next Tuesday. Col. Hcrrick brought up tho question of increasing tho polling placos in Ruataniwha Riding for taking tho Local Option poll at Takapau, Ashley-Clinton, Makaretu and Onga Onga, in addition to Waipukurau, which tho people in Makaretu considered a grievance The ohairman said that when he moved tho resolution for providing polling places for licensing committees ho quite forgot the- local option polls, which only occurred every throo years. Ultimately Col. Horrick gave notice to amend tho former resolution by adding somo additional polling places, including Heretaunga, Makatoku, &c.

Tho Council thon went into committeo of ways and means, when tho following important resolutions woro oarriod:—Applications arc to bo mado to Road Boards for roturns showing the amount of rates levied during tho year lb'B3-G, exclusive of Crown and naiivo rates. That applications bo mado to all tho Road Boards iv tho county, enquiring if fhey aro willing to merge their roads into tho county, to cnablo the eouufy to luko over all roads, and striko ono rate for tho wholo. That arrangements bo mado with tho Road Overseer, by v,hich his services will bo available for the Road Boards, on paying him for his advice, and that he bo not allowed travelling expenses after Ist Deccmbor. That applications bo"**" called for a County Clerk at £200 a year, a month's notico to bo given lo tho present holder of tho offico.

Standing orders were suspended, f o cnablo ordinary business to bo taken ot the meeting on 25th November, when the ohairman will bo elected for tho year. Tenders wero received as follows for carting metal through Norsewood:—J. O'Kane 3s 3d per yard; W. Howes, 3s 3d; j' Bradley, 2s" 7d ;P. Sculloy, 2s ; MW. liussen and Burt, 2s 4d (acoeptt-d), '
