THE A. AND P. SOCIETY'S SHOW.

Fibst Day,

The Agricultural and Pastoral Society's annual show is the ono ovent of the year which draws town and country together to see what has been deemed most worthy of exhibition in the progress mado in pastoral pursuits. Cavil as some do at tho country being given over wholly to tho breeding of ' cattle and sheop, it has got to bo admitted that no part of the colony is more suitable for such an industry, and no ono will deny that the utmost enterprise has been shown in bringing it to perfection. With tho exception of the timber trade, which is only just in its infancy, the whole of the Hawke's Bay provincial district depends entirely upon the pastoral industries of the country. A depressed state of tho wool market reflects alike on town and country, and creates f a depression that is felt by the tradesman as severely as by the laborer. On the prices of wool;, tallow, and meat so wo estimate the prosperity of the district, for those articles .of export are all that we have as sources of tho spending power of tho producer. It is no wonder then that the Socioty's show is regarded with so much interest, and that a -.public holiday is observed on its second day. The first day of tho show is given over to sheop judging and attracts no one but those • more immediately concerned. Neither is .any encouragement to tho general public to enter tho _round, the expenses of getting from town to Hastings and baok being quite enough to deter most people other than exhibitors. No abatemont was mado in tho ordinary railway fare, which is half-a-crown each way, and a charge of five shillings was mado for admission to the graund. Mr Ashton had a booth for the sale of light refreshments which were very acceptable to those engaged in tho heavy work of tho day, and Mr Watt had tho luncheon room in tho Grand-stand whore an excellent repast was provided. \ .To tho brief remarks telegraphed yester\j day from the grpund we have v«>ry little to add. The judging was not completed till lata ,in the afternoon, the merinos occupying an exceptionally long time owing to tho close competition of the oxbibits. This year Messrs Royse and Anderson succeeded in taking the first honors in merinos, wresting the laurels from Mr D. M'Lean's flocks and no ono will say that those gentlemen aro not fully entitled to the rewards they have so pluckily striven for year after yeai;. At forraor shows they might well deem themselves to have been somewhat harshly treated, but undismayed by want of success thoy took their beating, determined to do better another time. Their sheep were certainly in splendid condition, and of superior quality, while tho number of their exhibits showed what a grand flock they must have to pick from. Mr D. McLean's exhibits ranked next, and his sheep maintained tho high character for which they aro so justly known. Mr McLean fairly divided honors with Messrs Royse and -Anderson, tho former taking 8 firsts, 7 seconds, and 3 thirds, to the hitter's 11 firsts, 9 seconds, nnd 7 thirds. Tho other exhibitors of merinos wero Messrs H. R. Russell, who took 5 firsts, 4 seconds, and 3 third prizes; Mr D. Gollan, and tho managers of the Woburn (T. P. Russell's) and : Milbourne stations. It is worthy of note that the merinos were all bred by the exhibitors, with but one oxceptiou—a Dowling ram, shown by Messrs Royso and Anderson. In the Lincoln olosses Mr Tanner carried *- almost everything before him, as he certainly deserved to do, for ho has spared r.o expense'in, bringing his flock to perfection. The largo number of prizes awarded him, thirty-one incumber, testified to tho excellence of his exhibits. From outside the province thore wore only two exhibitors, the Waikato Land Association, and Mr J. Reid of Oamam. The former showed a few Shropshire Downs, and tho latter Borne really magnificently grown Romney Marsh. Neither of theßO exhibitors had any competitors in the classes in which they showed. Tho same may be said of Mr T. Bishop's Bonthdowns. An interesting feature of the show was the large number of entries of pens containing from five to twenty sheep, thero being twenty-four of these oxhibits in longwools, and seven in morinos. In former **\ years special prizo cups were offored by private settlers to induce breeders to show in these quantities but this year the Society recognising tho volue of these exhibits have included them in their regular order in tho catalogue.
