SPORTING NOTES.

[By " Hippo."] I take this opportunity of reminding owners of horses that tho acceptances for the Waipawa County Races close this day week, at which timo tho entrances for the Selling Race close. As this race is for £30 tho winner is to be sold for £50, and as there is an allowance of 71b for every £10 reduction in tho selling price, there should be no lack of horses entered for this raco, as it offers a capital opportunity for anyono who has a horso with a bit of foot, to sell his horso for a good price. Tho entrance money is only £2. The following horses aro now in training on the Hastings course for this meeting: — Percy Martin has Lconata, Smeorach, Mangaohane, Oboron, and Denbigh. E. Gilpin has Pastime and a hack. Dennett has Ugly Buck, Faugh-a-ballagh, Kincraig, Assegai, and several hacks aro also in training.

Mr W. Ruddick informs me that he is so dissatisfied with Emir Bey's running in Auckland that he does not intend to start him again. The horso had done some good trials before ho left here, and both owner and trainer thought they had a good thing on in Auckland, but as usual when he got in company and had tho colors up he refused to try. Barron, who took Director up to Auckland, has won two hurdle races with him. He also bought Claude in Auckland and won a hurdle race in Cambridge with him, or rather ho came in first but was disqualified on the grounds of Claude's rider striking the rider of the second horse over tho head with his whip.

I am informed that Chummy who was nominated for the Bracelet at the W.C. meeting is not in training. Rubina must bo a long way the best mare that has beon runuing in New Zealand for some years past, her performance in the Great Autumn Handicap whero she carried Sst, and did tho mile anda-half in 2min. must stamp her as an Al mare. The best previous time to this, for this race was when Welcomo Jack with Sst 4lbs did it in 2 mm. Had this morning been fair I had intonded to have given some account of what work was being done on the training track, but the weather prevented cither horse or myself going out, and this accounts for the shortness of my notes this week. A general meeting of the Hawke's Bay Coursing Club was held at Kelly's Hotel, Hastings, last evening, wheu the rules as drawn up by the committee were confirmed. The meeting was well attended and soveral new members joined. The committee decided to have the first coursing meeting early in June, when an eight dog stake will be run, the club to give 5 soys and a sweepstake of 30s for each dog will be tho value of the stakes. Should the meeting come off successfully and tho hares be plentiful, thero is no doubt another meeting will be got up boforo tho end of the season.
