WAIPAWA.

[FEOM OUE OAVN COEEESrONDENT.] February 24

The funeral of the late Mr A. Robb took place this afternoon, and Avas attended by moro people, it Avas remarked, than any previous occasion of tho kind held in Waipawa, tho number of persona present being estimated at 250. The members of Loyal Abbotsford Lodge, to the number of 63, headed the cortege, folloAved by 50 gentlemen on foot, and 36 boys from tho district school. Behind these came the remains of deceased, ivith Mr Corskie leading tho two sons of Mr Robb, and other relatives and personal friends. There Avere sixteen vehicles, and nearly 30 horsemen brought up the rear. A slight shower occurring just as they started did not improve matters. On arrival at Alderlcy cemetery the Rev. S. Douglas performed the funeral rites most impressively, and Mr Baker read the ritual of the order. Among those present Avere several gentlemen from Napier ; Mr Smith, M.H.R.; Messrs Inglis, Johnson, Rathbone, Dillon, and Williams, Justices of the Peace; Mr Bibby, chairman of tho Ttnvn Board; the Rev. J. C. Ecclos, Drs. Todd and Mirbach, and in fact eA'eryono of position in tho district.

The bracelet to be run for at the forthcoming meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club is iioav on vioAV at the shop of Mr Cooper, jeAveller, Hastings street, Napier, Avho has supplied it. It is very elegant as well as valuable, costing £30. It consists of a plain but massive gold band with three stones, a diamond in the centre of tAvo sapphires handsomely set. I am not a sporting man myself, but since tho horses are to be nominated by ladies and ridden by gentlemen, I should suppose this Avould bo the most interesting event on the course.

The nominations for these races close on Monday Aveek, 2nd March.

Mr Macallister, the County Auditor, who has been staying here for thelastfew weeks on account of illuess, has recovered and resumed his duties. / There is considerable Avork going on —W in the country to the Avestward of this. On | the Oero road, Mr Wheeler has a contract \ for metalling tAvo or three miles on hand, which is progressing very satisfactorily. He haseight teams and about fifteen men atwork. The road from Tamumu to Pourerere, the nearest coast to us, is now in such good condition that buggies have been driven the whole Avay. Patangata is also doing a lot of metalling, while the weather holds go%. The Mail of to-day contains an ominious notice as follows, which I hear betokens much trouble. It is much to be regretted on Mr Hobson's account:—"Notice. The undermentioned hapus, who have been found to be part OAA'ncrs of the Otawhao and Whenuahou blocks, hereby state that wo did not agree to lease to Hobson, or his adviser or agent Mr Sheehan. We will never agree, owing to the bad conditions in that lease. We, the Maoris, do not understand them. Ngatiparakiore, Ngatimarau, NgatikaiAvaru, Ngatitoiomaho, NgatiTurahui."

It is possible that there will not be any conflict over the election of a Licensing Committee in this district after all, as it is stated that the old committee (Avith Mr H. H. Bridge instead of Mr Gollan, who never acted), are to be nominated, and that the - teetotallers are agreeable to the selection. Time Avill shoAv, but it does seem strange that no less than three out of the five aro 1 outsiders, which leads to the inference there aro not sufficient fit persons in or near ' the town.
