EDUCATION BOARD.

Tho Board met at 11 a.m. PresentMessrs J. D. Ormond, M.H.R., (in tlo chair), Guy, White, Harding, Sutton, J. N. AVilliams, Captain Russell, M.H.R., aud Rev. D. Sidey. CORRESPONDENCE. From Danevirke, forwarding the resignation of Mr Robcrtshaw from the 31st of January.—Resignation accepted. From Frasertown, asking for a palirg fence.—Deferred. From Education Department, regretting that the Government could supply no information at present with regard to the building grant.—Received. From Gisborne, asking for additions to the master's residence.—Deferred. From same, asking if the usual allowance would be given to the head-master if Miss Oatridge succeeded in passing her certificate examination successfully.—Granted subject to tho certificate being obtaine^ From same, forwarding the'resignatiou of Mr Chenhall, —Accepted. From Hampden, asking that the teacher might be appointed mistress. —Approved. From Hastings, calling attention to the inadequate accommodation. —Deferred. From Hcretaunga, asking for an enlargement of tho school. —D eferred. From Patangata, asking that the school grounci should be fenced.—Deferred. From Patutahu, asking for additions to tho master's house.—Deferred. From Taradale, asking that the school might be painted.—Deferred. From Waipawa, asking for additions to the school.—Deferred. From AVaipukurau, requesting that the master might be removed, as the Inspector's report was not favorable.—The Inspector's report did not refer to the teaching of the headmaster, and therefore the request could not be entertained. From Maraetaka, notifying that J. W. Johnson was erecting a school, and asking tho Board's assistance.—The Board would supply apparatus and capitation grant for pupils. From Wallingford, forwarding the resignation of the mistress.—Accepted. From the Education Department saying the Government's intentions were that the AVelliugton Normal School would be available for the Hawke's Bay students.—A letter was also read from the Principal of tho Normal School, Christchurch, stating that two of the Hawke's Bay students had taken high places in their classes in competition with matriculated students.—lt was decided to forward a copy of the Christchurch letter to the Education Department, AYellington, as the Board were of opinion a university town had great advantages over a town not so circumstanced. MOTION. Mr Sutton moved, " that a report be prepared for next meeting, showing the several amounts which are urgently required to provide for the enlargement of buildings where they are overcrowded, and all sums required for sundry repairs, and the estimated number of children to be provided for." —Carried. MISCELLANEOUS. Messrs 0. Alpers and R. Ryder, and Miss Palmer, had their scholarsbi_3s continued for another year, and the following new students were approved of for scholarships : —Joseph PL AVorboys, George Gosnell, Carrie Davis. If Miss Palmer did not accept, Mary Baty to receive the appointment. The bonuses to the various schools -*vere voted, no bonuses beinggrantcd to the former masters of tho AVaipawa and AVfcTodville schools, they having left tlie district during the year. The present master at AVaipaw* to receive no bonus as ho had only been in charge since tho examination, while the AVcodville master will receive a pro rata allowance. Captain Russell said he was disappointed with the results achieved in the sewing for which he had offered prizes; unless there was more competition he would not continue those prizes. He did not know if the Board could compel competition in the matter. Scholarships wero awarded to the following pupils of £20, tenable for two years, as the result of the recent examinations: — Rose Chcgwidden, 11. Fannin, A. Lewis, Alice Collinge, and Edgar Maude, at such school as might bo approved by tho Board. The pupils from the Gisborne school to be allowed £20 additional for board purposes outside their district. MOTIONS. Mr White moved that members of tho Board receive their travelling expenses, the resolution to tako effect from thc T last election. He said they were the only Board in New Zealand who did not receive the allowance —Carried. Rev, D. Sidey moved his motion in reference to tho using of the Boartfe schools for election purposes, and the masters acting as returning officers at local elections. _ —Tho motion was carried in an amended form.
