[Pee United Peess Association.]

Auckland, This day. Mr Sloman, mathematical master of the Auckland Grammar School, has been appointed principal of the Auckland Girls' High School. John Taylor, . greengrocer, formerly a farmer at Kaiapoi and at Taranaki, in •which latter district he lost heavily, attempted suicide last night by taking laudanum, owing to depression of spirits. He is now recovering. Edward Dimant was committed for trial yesterday on the charge of stabbing Francis Durant, a French seaman. ■ A deputation, which included Messrs Mitchelson andßucklaud, M.H.R.'s, waited upon the Minister of Justice yesterday, urging the inclusion of the Kawhia in the district over which the sale of drink is prohibited. The Minister said it was his impression that Kawhia was included, but he would telegraph to the Native Minister for information.

The following cablegram has been received from the Agent-General:—"Lon-don, December 3. Post-office notices have been issued announcing alternative fortnightly mail by direct steamers. No further matter will be sent via Briudisi unless so superscribed." The following cable message was received yesterday by the Government from Mr Dalley, acting Colonial-Secretary of New South Wales :—" Small-pox at present confined to one district of the city. No known cases at large, but 14 cases in Small-pox Hospital, in strict quarantine. Four eases are confluent, four semi-confluent, three discrete, and three convalescent. A strict house investigation has been instituted in the affected locality by the Government medical adviser."

It is understood that many difficulties were experienced by the Government in framing the regulations for the election of the Board for tho Government Insurance Association, and it was not until yesterday that they wore sufficiently shaped so as to be presented to tho Executive Council. _ They were passed yesterday by the Council, and forwarded to Christchurch for his Excellency's signature. They are to be gazetted in a few-days. The votes of the policyholders are to be taken by means of voting papers which will be supplied by the Government. ■ ■ : • . Dunedin, This day The Trades and Labor Council are urging the Government to introduce a clause into the mail contracts prohibiting the employment of Chinese crews. A deputation from the City Council waited on tho Premier yesterday with reference to tho clause in the Public Works Act validating the Sidey compensation. The clause is in connection with the Silverstream waterworks. Some of the Councillors expressed the opinion that tho clause had been inserted solely on Mr Sidey's account. Tho Premier said ho could not agree with the view of the matter taken by the Council. Ho had learned that it was suggested to the Minister for-Public Works by Mr W. D. Stewart, and the Minister agreed to introduco it after consulting the Under-Secre-tary for Public Works and finding that there wore a number of cases which it would meet. After hearing all that had been said on tho subject, ho (Mr Stout) would support' the measure if it were again brought before Parliament; It would be a most immoral proceeding if tho Corporation were allowed to take advantage of what he considered a doubtful point of law, a mere technical defect in a man's notice of claim, and to pay simply what they pleased. A. man named James Anderson, a farmer at Ida Valley, is supposed to have been drowned at Clyde yesterday afternoon. He arrived in Clyde to see the doctor, and was on his way to the hospital, when he was observed to descend the river bank, take off his coat and vest, and'walk into the Clutha river. Some further particulars of the Nenthorn fatal affray have been received. The original quarrel seems to have arisen-in banter over a dog fight. It lasted for some hours' and reached its height about one o'clock on Tuesday morning, when Mrs Meldrum got some persons to interfere. Meldrum was found lying beside a creek near by in an insensible condition. His principal wound seems to have been a stroko on the head with thd butt end of a gun, said to have been given him by Fitzgerald; who is still at large. .Meldrum was also stabbed in several piaces with a shoemaker's knife. He was put on a litter and carried by four men to Hindon, blithe died on the way.' ; The inquest takes place to-day.
