WAIROA.

fFEOIt Otm OWN COBKESPOXDENT.] It is reported, and probably with truth, that Mr T. Sanders, who.is butchering here for Mr S. Thorpe, has been left a legacy. The amount is variously estimated at from £1000 to £10,000. -o • The Mohaka races take place on Boxing. Day. There aye eight events on the prolamine, but their total value does not amount to JBGO. .While I should bo sorry to say that Mohaka people should not go in for sports of their own, I must confess feeling a regret at the practice, now so general in New Zealand of holiday race meetings in every eonutry district where a few "scrubbers" and a £50 note can be mustered. It would be far better for each province to have one good Jockey Club. There would then he some good .prizes_ to compete for, and lovers- of horse-racing ■would see some sport worth seeing.. For the Waikaremoana Riding , Messrs. J.-H. Brown, W. Moloney, and T.J. Tunks were elected. The polling resulted as follows :—Frascrtowu—J. H. Brown, 55; W. Moloney, 44; T. J. Tiinks, 36; R. E. Stevens* 25. Mahia booth— J. H. Brown, 15; W. Moloney, 12; T. J. Tunks, 10; R. ,E. Stevens, 0. The numbers declared were as follows: —J. H. Brown, 70 ;W. Moloney, 66; T. J. Tunks, -1G ;R. E. Stevens, 25. The reports of the Inspector of fechools on the Wairoa and Frasertown schools are very satisfactory. In the case of the Wairoa school (the full result of the examina-.] tion is not yet to hand), the per centage of passes was 82,. a result eminently.creditable, and bears witness to the painstaking energy of Mrs Gosnell. In the case of the Frasertown school, out of 23 examined, 20 passed. The Inspector reports the result of the examination as " very encouraging." The Legislature must certainly be commended for its foresight in providing that ratepayers who figure on the defaulter's list should not be allowed to vote at county elections. " Between the day prior to, and the day after the election the rate collector received close on £300 in rates.

A concert in aid of the Wairoa district school prize fund took place in the Hall on Thursday night, there was a good attendance, and except in the case of two songs, the audience were most orderly. Mr Flint, chairman of the school committee occupied the uhair. A number of songs, duetts and choruses were given by local amateurs, and as all did their best to make the affair a success, it would be invidious to select anyone for particular mention, and your readers will excuse the want of a full report.. I may, however, without giving offence, state that Mr Kettle (of Murray, Roberts and Co), kindly obliged with two songs,—" Carissima,""and "In Happy Moments," both of which were much appreciated. The school children sang several pieces in good time, and with considerable expression. The proceeds amounted to about £11. With all due respect to tpir Julius Vogel's Government, and his desire to duly guard the liberty of the subject, I am afraid prisoners will be worse off under the new regime than the old. It has been hard enough to find one Justice always disengaged here, and it will certainly be much harder to find two. Tho only thing I can now see for it is an addition to the ranks of " the Great Unpaid." For the chairmanship of the Wairoa County Council two probable candidates are mentioned—Messrs T. J. Tunka, and John Hunter Brown (of Wbakaki). Either would make a good chairman. ■.
