THE HANLAN-BEACH SCULLING MATCH.
SAFETY OF STEAMSHIP HASSIA. RE-ARREST OF POPPENS, THE ABSCONDER, (Received August 19, 0.55 a.m.) SYDNEY. Monday. A large meeting took place at Punch's Hotel to-day, when the stakes in the late sculling match Avere paid over. Hanlan admitted that ho had wilfully- fouled Beach, because ho believed that the latter had crossed over into his Avater. Hanlan expressed his desire to row another match with Beach Avithin three mouths, but Beach positively refuses to meet the ex-cham-pion Avitliin six months. Clifford also offered to row Hanlan, but the latter refused to take up the challenge. The captain of the steamer Tomki, Avho Avas present, stated that ho was compelled to run close upon Hanlan's boat in order to avoid running aground.
