THE MAYOR AND THE GOVERNMENT.
Tho following letter was written by His AVorship the Mayor, at the request of the Council, to tlic Minister for Lands, to which wo append the reply [a telegram] received to-day;— Mayor's Office, Napier, 22nd December, 1883. Sir, —I have the honor to request you wjll have tho goodness to let me know whether thero is any objection to tho occupation by the Municipal Corporation, on their evaoua; ting tho rooms in the old Provincial Buildr ing-s now in their possession, of other rooms iii tlic same building. J. am informed by Mr Bamford, tho custodian, that there are several unused rooms, and that they could be spared as a temporary measure, without inconvenience to any Government Department.—l am, &c., AY- I- Si'ENCKK, Mayor. Your letter of 22nd instant received beforo Mr Rolleston left AVellington. Ho instructed me to state, in reply to any application that might be made by tho Borough Council for permission to occupy other rooms in the Government buildings, that if the Council would first give up possession of the rooms now occupied, any application for other rooms would bo considered upon its merits.—H.
