HAWKE'S BAY EDUCATION BOARD.

Tins Day. Present: Messrs J. D. Ormond (.•hairman), Roehab Harding, D. Guy, Captain Russell, and tho Rev. 1). Sidey. COnRESPONDEXCE. The following correspondence was road and dealt with : — From the Frasortown School Committee, asking for the sum of £20 for funning in now school and other work.—lt was decided that consideration of this be deferred for tho present. From tho Gisbornc School Committee, asking for another pupil teacher for the school. Resolved that tho Board would approvo of the appointment of a pupil teacher when the committee recommended one. From the Hastings School Committee, asking for tho services of an assistant master and an additional pupil teacher.—

The Board approved of the application. From the Meanee School Committee, applying for an artesian well for the district school".—-Consideration deferred for tho present. From the secretary Napier School Committee, forwarding application from O. T. L. Alpcrs, who applied forono of the training school scholarships offered by the Government. —Resolved that tho application be agreed to, and also in the case of Robert Ryder, who applied for one of the scholarships through the chairman of the Havelock school, "it was further resolved that application be made to the Education Department asking for permission to attend at the Christchurch Normal School in preference to Wellington, both candidates having friends there. Front the Napier School Committee, stating that they had resolved to recommend Mr James Smith, of Taradale, ccrtilicated teacher Class Cl, for tho appointment of second master of the Napier district school.—The appointment was confirmed by the Board.

Memorandum from the secretary of the Education Department, to the effect that he was unable at present to give any information as to the probable amount of the building grant, or when it will bo placed at tho Board's disposal. Tho following motion was passed on the Rev D. Sidey's motion, seconded by Captain Russell, "The Board desired to place on record the regret with •which it received this memorandum, as for ■want of funds or any information as to what funds will be granted for school buildings tho Board is unable cither to do anything to meet the most pressing requirements, or to provide for carrying out works that are essentially requisite, and which ought to be executed in the Christmas holidays."

From tho Napier School Committee, asking for furthur consideration of the Committee's previous application to have the school distempered during the Christmas holidays.—Deferred for the present. From the Norsowood School Committee, Asking for now -window blinds for the school. —Resolved that no grant can be made for tho purpose, as the blinds, with a little repair, are quite suitable for present use. Tho following resolution was also passed, "That tho secretary bo authorised tj address a circular to teachers of schools, saying that tho Board's attention has been called to tho great destruction of school apparatus in some of the district schools, and requests teachers to see that the apparatus, supplied at considerable cost, bo carefully preserved. The Board further desires the Inspector to call attention in future to any caso in which school property is destroyed by nogligenco or want of care." From tho Taradale School Committee, stating that Master W. Kirkpatrick bad passed Standard V. examination, and askthat ho rank as first year pupil teacher.— Resolved that Kirkpatrick cannot _be recognised as a pupil teacher of the first year, he not having passed the sixth standard. It was also resolved to defer for the present tho Committee's application for the painting of tho school and other work. From tho Treasury, stating that the sum of £G'i Gs Id had been placed to the credit of the llawke's Bay Education tho maintenance of students at the Wel- . lington Normal School for the September quarter. From tho Woodville School Committee, stating that Mr Joseph Worboys had been appointed assistant teacher for the Woodville school.—Resolved that Mi- Worboys bo approved of as pupil teacher, but not us v assistant teacher.

From the Treasury, stating , tbnt ,CS9'2 13s -id hiid been remitted to the credit of the Uourd as payments for October. From the Wa'ipiikurau School Coinniitt.ee, calling attention to the overcrowded st.ito of the school, and asking that the room he either enlarged ov a now class room added. —Deferred for the present. From the Registrar of the University of New Zealand, stating that it is not possible to arrange for holding the degree examination at Napier this year, as there arc no university students there, and only two school teachers have intimated their desire to come up. In regard to the future the matter depended on the number of candidates. . From Mr Robert Lamb, architect, reportin"- that tlio new infant school at Gisborne has boon .satisfactorily completed for about £2 10s more than the contract amount, and is now occupied. Mr Lamb estimated the cost of a brick or concrete tank tor the Gisborne school at £G5. —Report approved
