PETANE RACES.

President, Mr Thomas Tanner. Stewards, Messrs H. J. Twigg, W. A. Richardson, 0. Villcrs, L. Do Pelichet, A. T. Haultain. Judge, Mr P. Stitton. Handioiipper, Mr J. 6. Evett. Starter, Mr A. McCartney. Clerk of the Scales, Mr L. Do Peliehet. Tlio weather was all that could be wished for by holiday-makers, and the little village of Petanc looked its best. The attendance was bettor than it has ever been before at these races, and the grand stand and. totalisator were well patronised, no loss than £1197 going through the machine. The biggest dividend paid out was on the hack race, £11 os. Tho Garrison Band was on the ground, and enlivened the intervals between tho races. There was no drunkenness or rows on tho course, and no accidents ; and, although there were not large fields, tho races went off successfully, and we believe (thanks to tho totalisator, worked by Mr 11. P. Cohen) the club will have a balance to their credit. One noticeable mistake was that no time was appointed or notified on tho cards for tho starling of each race ; the consequence was that in some cases all the horses were on tho course ready and waiting , for nearly half-an-hour before they started. This no doubt will bo rectified next time. On account of tho High Weight Handicap being a walk over, the club gave another race, the Stewards' Cup Handicap, but they received very little encouragement for their liberality. The first race of the day was the HANDICAP lITJRDI/E EACE, Of 30 soys., about 2 miles, over 8 nights of hurdles 3ft Gin high. T. Gilpin's eh g Pastime, lOst 51b, G years (E. Gilpin) .. .. .. 1 W. 11. Honor's by Wild Dayrell, lOst Gib (owner) - —Wild Dayrell took the lead over the first hurdle, and cantered the first time round, slowly followed by Pastime. After passing the post the first time Pastime took the lead, and led over the next hurdle. A good race then took placo between the two, both horses jumping well. Pastime, although he was not able to got far away from Wild Dayrell, maintained his lead, winning a good race by a nock. Thore was £10 in tho totalisator on Pastime, and £32 on Wild Dayrell. Dividend, £1 ICa. Honor laid a protest against the rider of Pastime for having crossed him and tried to turn him off at the hurdles. The stewards, after hearing all tho evidence, dismissed the protest.

In the meantime Radames and Pungawerewere got on the course again, and went in chase of the other two. Gooseman shortly after thispassed Loch Lomond, and tried to get on terms with Heretaunga, but was unable to do so, and the gallant little grey maintained his lead, and won comfortably by two lengths.
