The second day's racing of tho Victorian Racing Club's spring meeting took place to-day in the presence of a vast assemblage of visitors. The number of persons on the

ground i.s believed to bo the largest ever recorded. Sir "Williamßobinson, Governor of South Australia, and Sir George Strahan, Governor of Tasmania, witnessed the proceedings. The weather was fine throughout the greater part of the day, though somewhat sultry during the early part of tho afternoon. "The new arrangements on the course were perfect. The following are tho results of tho various events : — HURDLE RACE, Throe miles. Ringwood .. .. ..1 Lady Hampden,. .. 2 Agitation .. . . .. 3 —Eleven horses started, and it was a good race. Martini-Henri .. .. 1 First Water 2 Commotion .. .. 3 —Aide-de-camp, Anglesey, Archie, Bis Bis, Calma, Claptrap, Cunnnmulla, Despot, Dirk Hattcraick, Dukedom, First Demon, Kathleen Mavourneen, Kingsdale, Kohinoor, Legrand, Lesbia, Linda, Magnet, Nicholas, Pollio, Recovery, Santa Glaus, Sardius, Stockwoll, Sweet William, and Tho Gem also ran. Sir Modrcd was scratched. A good start was effected, Claptrap, Dirk Hatteraick, and Legrand being the first to got away. Crossing the tan Dirk Hattcraick was in front, MartiniHenri, Archie, and Claptrap following, and Despot, Cunniunullfi, First Demon, Commotion, Dukedom, arid Aide-de-camp holding tho central position. Passing tho grand stand Claptrap again took the lead, with Archie and Martini-Henri close behind, Losbia, Stockwell, Despot, Aide-de-camp, and Nicholas following, and Dirk Hattcraick last. Rounding the turn Claptrap was still in front, and Archie next. Linda then shot to the front, and led along fclic river side; tl] en came Archie, Claptrap, and MartiniHenri, with Aide-de-camp, Lesbia, and Dukedom well up, and Dirk Hatteraick still last. At the bridge Archie and Claptrap again went forward, closely followed by Linda, Martini-Henri, Despot, and Dukedom, with Santa Glaus, and Stockwell iv tho centre of field. At the back of the course Archie and Santa Claus, who had taken second place, were leading, with Dukedom third, and Aide-de-camp and Kohinoor last. Entering tho straight Martini-Henry took the lead, and Claptrap followed next, tho rest of the field in straggling order, First Water coming through them with a rush and taking an improved position. Martini-Henri, going well, drew away from the rest, and increasing his lead romped home an easy winner, First Water, coming lip fast at the finish, landing two lengths away, followed in order by Commotion, Sardius, Magnet, First Demon, Aide-de-camp, Recovery, Archie, and Nicholas, Kohinoor, Bis Bis, and Kingsdale bringing up the rear. WELCOME STAKES, A sweepstake of 15 soys, with 200 added ; for two-year-olds ; the second horse to save his stake ; four furlongs. Hon. W. Robinson's Liverpool (Rudings) 1 Hon! G. M'Lean's Lady Evelyn (Illen) 2 Mr E. Cutts' Watersprite colt (J. Thompson) .. .. ■ • .. 3 —Talebearer, Carlton, Red Sea, Take Miss, Wave filly, and Dime also started. Liverpool won by about three lengths, Lady Evelyn second, and Watersprito colt third. Time, slssecs. Tho totalisator dividend inside was £2 10s ; outside, £2 ss. NEW ZEALAND CUP HANDICAP, A sweepstake of 20 soys each, with 1000 soys added; the second horse to receive 100 soys, and tho third horse 50 soys from the stakes; two miles.

Mr D. O'Brien's Tasman (Derrett) .. 1 Hon. W. Robinson's Nonsense (Wattio; 2 Mr M. Smith's Tim Whiffler (Laing) .. 3 —Cheviot, Lady Emma, Mischief, Turquoise, Envious, The Jilt, Adamant, Hippodamia, and The Poet also ran. There was considerable excitemont over this race on account of the Hon. W. Robinson having declared to win with Nonsense, which it was known he had backed freely at 100 to 35 and 100 to 30 for large amounts. At the start considerable delay wns caused by tho unRfcadiness of some of the horses, particularly Nonsense. After a great deal of trouble a fair start was effected. Nonsense and Tasman at once shot to the front, while Tim Whiffier had all the worst of it. Tasman took the lead round the bend, with The Poet and Nonsense on his quarter, Envious and Ilippodamia close up. When noaring the stand the last named took the lead, Tasman second, and The Poet third. The rest were in a cluster, except Lady Emma, who was last. Rounding the bend Nonsense still led. Cheviot overhauled Tasman, and Hippo took fourth place. They passed Cutts' in this order, and here Envious held out signals of distress. At tho back of the course Nonsense had a load of about a length, while Ilippodamia was gaining on Tasman and Cheviot, the last named falling back into the ruck. At Ford's Tasman again went into second place, and Cheviot foil still further to tho rear. Turning into the straight Nonsense led, Tasman fast closing up, and Ilippodamia lying third. The whip was now out to Adamant and Tasman, while Tim Whifllor took third position. As they nearcrl the stand Tasman gained still more on Nonsense, and a tremendous race ensued for first honors, terminating in favor of Mr D. O'Brien's horse by a neck. Tim Whiffler a good third, Hippo fourth, Turquoise fifth, Lady Emma sixth, and the others tailing off. The close finish caused intense excitement, and the victory was very popular. Derrett was loudly cheered as he returned to tho paddock. Time, 3mins. 36lsecs. The dividend in tho inside totalisator was £G IDsGd; outside, £7.

The metropolitan race meeting was continued to-day. The weather was dull and threatening, with a cold north-cast wind. The attendance was fairly good. SELLING PLATE HANDICAP, Of 50 soys., I;} miles. McEvedoy's Trumpeter, 7st 10lb (Smith) 1 Mason and Vallance's Jack 9st (Walls) .. 2 Shcehan's Psyche 7st 71b (Watson) .. 3 —Sunlight (Gstlllb) and Gold Dust (GstSlb) also ran. Psyche was the favorite. Gold Dust made the running round the back of tho course, and on entering the straight he was joined by all but Sunlight, who was done.
