" Pero Gomez full brother to Vasco di Gama won the Middle Park Plate, Newmarket Stake*, Ascot, Derby, St. Lcger Donciister Stakes, Grand Duke of Michael Stakes and Royal Stakes (in all about £1-1,000). Ho has been a most successful sire in England, and his son Peregrine won the 2000 guineas stakes (worth about £5000) and was only beaten by a head for the Derby and was sold for 7000 guineas. It is no use looking at aristocratic breeding, grand appearance and good performances, if Vasco does not succeed with real good mares in begetting racehorses equal to any that have ever graced a racecourse. Gladiator was never tried to race, but his full brother, Messager, was a rare performer on the flat, over hurdles, and across country, having won the Northamptonshire Stakes as a 1 -year-old, Surrey Grand National Open Steeplechase, the Croydon Grand Hurdle Race, and ran second in the United Kingdom Steeplechase in 1871. He also won many races in France, and the sporting correspondent of the London Standard pronounced him the very best steeplechaser as a 5-year old. Gladiateur is also "grandsirc of Sussex, Sting and other wonderful performers. Tho performances of Sussex prove him to bo one of the best horses ever bred in Australia: it is needless to enumerate the number of his victories, except the Grand National Steeplechase of July, 1881, carrying top weight 13st lib. Gladiator is admitted to be one of tho handsomest thoroughbreds in the colony, and is eminently suited for getting racehorses, weight-carrying hunters, hurdleracers, and ladies' and gentlemen's hacks. He is throe years old, stands 13 hands 2 inches high, and possesses all the essential qualifications of a sire, namely, good constitution, temper, substance, strength, quality, and vigor. He is admirably adapted for getting weight carriers, coach horses, as well as racehorses, as he surpasses everything yet seen in New Zealand for size and strength, combined with the best blood that ever flowed in a horse's veins. He is by Danebury, out of Phoenix. Danebury is by the far-famed Tradiieer, dam Ada, winner of the Canterbury Derby, by St. Auburyn, sire of Tui Tui, Harakcke, and darns of Kateapo, Karara, Perfume, Ariel, &c, grand dam Princess by Glausus, sire by Diana, dam of that wonderful mare Mussidora, who produced the following horses:—Miss Jessie, winner of Victorian V.R.C. Derby ; Bclphegor, Sea Spray, winner of the V.R.C. and S.A.J.C. St. Ledger ; Brasis, winner of V.R.C. Derby, Oaks, and Melbourne Cup ; South Hamilton, winner of V.R.C. Three-year-old Stakes. It is sufficient to mention the name of Traducer, as he got the best horses, ever bred in New Zealand, namely, Lurline, Calumny, Lc Loup, Fish-hook, Templeton, Maritana, Bribery, Te Whctumarama, Black Prince, Sir Modrcd and a host of others too numerous to mention. Ada's dam Princes is also dam of Glaukos, Potentate, Symphony, dam of Lacenfeed-Casaudra, dam of Opera, winner of the Canterbury Derby and dam of that good old horse Tambourine.
