MELBOURNE,
AMENDING CONTEMPT OF COURT ACTS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. PROROGATION OF TASMANIAN PARLIAMENT.
Thursday. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (limited) held the opening wool sale for the season to-day. There was a croAvded attendance of Home and foreign buyers. Tho catalogue was of a fairly representative character, and comprised 2130 bales, of which all but 25 were sold. Competition was very brisk, and the prices realised were very satisfactory to the growers. Greasy wool sold up to 12-J-d, and scoured to lfijd. Prices generally were about equal to tho rates ruling at the close of last season. Owing to considerable improvement Avhieh has been manifested in the latest London advices the prospects for tho Melbourne sales are exceedingly good, and it is known that extensive buying orders arc on hand. Freights on a\'ool to London are quoted licro as follows: — Greasy, -id per lb ; scoured, gd. Harry" Thomas, avlio attempted to commit suicide in tho bank of Victoria in this city on tho 18th instant has been released from custody under a surety of £100 for his good behaviour.
