printed in circular form, with certificates from Capt. D. H. M'Kenzie, Capt. M. T Clayton, Lloyd's surveyor ; Captain H. B. Worsp, surveyor to the Auckland Marine Underwriters'" Association; Mr Geo. P. Pierce, general manager of the Thames Insurance Company ; Capt. Bendall, surveyor; and Messrs J. B. Graham and Thwaite. Mr Pierces letter contains the following remarkable testimony:—" In 1772 Marion dv Fresnie visited the Bay of Islands with two French ships-of-war. Crozet, his second in command, and sixty men were felling kauri trees two miles inland when the party were surprised, and Marion and his boat's crew were killed. They left cut down a tree which was there in 1559, A portion of this kauri, I cut upwards of 100 years ago, and sent it to France, and though it had been exposed to rain, decayed vegetation, &c, it was perfectly sound.' Copies of these circulars have been forwarded to Lloyd's by the outgoing mail steamer.
