Murtagh, of Hawke's Bay. He is a dark golden chesnut, standing 10 hands 2 inches high, aud possesses alf the essential qualifications of a sire, viz., o-ood constitution, substance, temper, conformation, and vigour. He is admirably adapted to yet good useful stock, as well as race horses". Ho is considered by competent judges to bo one of tho grandest horses ever seen in New Zealand. As a three-year-old he carried off three Derbys—Canterbury, AVellington, and Dunedin. At Canterbury he ran second for the Cup, Aveightfor age, and on the following day won the Christchurch Plate. At AVellington, after Avinning the Derby, ran Lara to a neck for the Cup, giving him two years and Gibs. Afterwards fii Dunedin he avou tho Publicans' Purse Handicap, defeating Isaac AValton over his favorite distance, giving him two years and Tibs. At the same meeting ho cantered home in front of the wonderful horse Tomplcton for the Queen's Plate. lor further performance see Turf Register. The Premier has also been a grand performer on the turf, having won the AVairarapa Stakes, three miles, beating Koarria, Fishhook, and eight others. He also avou the Empire Plate at AVellington, beating eight others ; but, like St. Patrick, he Avas put to the stud too soon without giving him a chance to distinguish himself" as his family has done before and after him. St. Patrick is one of the handsomest horses ever bred in New Zealand. He is thoroughly sound, has a beautiful head and muscular neck lot into slanting shoulders, short back, grand quarters, long gaskins, good legs, and flat bone. He possesses all that is necessary in a sire, size, bone, and breeding. He is out of that far-famed mare Phoenix by Gownsman (imported), out of Ikamataki by Figaro (imported), out of Brunette by Riddlesworth (imported). Phoenix has been a clipper on the turf. She started in 46 races and scored 41 AA'ins as follows:—First season: Hawke's Bay, 6 : AVellington, 4 ; Pararao, 3; Pabawhanui, 4 ; Tercuacua, 2 ; Foxton, 4; Taratahi, 2; Opaki, 3; AVcyanga, 4. Second season: AVellington, 3; Pararoa, 2 : Raugitikci, 3. Her last and greatest performance in the AVairarapa Avas in the Ladies' Purse, carrying 12st 41b—4st 4lb of which was dead weight—ending the career of one of the grandest animals that ever stripped on the New Zealand turf. Last season I had to turn him to account by standing him at the AVairoa, Avhero he served 92 mares, Avhich I also hope to see him do this season in his new field. He is three years old, stands 15 hands 2 inches high, and possesses all tho essential qualifications of a sire, namely, good constitution, temper, substance, strength, quality, and vigor. He is admirably adapted for getting Aveight carriers, coach horses, as well as racehorses, as he surpasses everything yet seen in New Zealand for size and strength, combined with the best blood that ever flowed in a horse's veins. He is by Danebury, out of Phoenix. Danebury is by the far-famed Traduccr, dam Ada, winner of the Canterbury Derby, by St. Auburyn, sire of Tui Tui, Harakeke, and dams of Kakapo, Karara, Perfume, Ariel, &c, grand dam Princess by Gratis, sire by Diana, dam of that Avonderful mare Mussidora, AAdio produced the folloAA'ing horses: —Miss Jessie, winner of Victorian V.R.C. Derby; Belphegor, Sea Spray, Avinner of the V.R.C. and S.A.J.C. St. Ledger; Brasis, Avinner of V.R.C. Derby, Oaks, aud Melbourne Cup ; South Hamilton, Avinner of Three-year-old Stakes. It is sufficient to mention the name of Tradueer, as ho got the best horses ever bred in NeAV Zealand, Lurline, Calumny, Lo Loup, Fish-hook, Templeton, Maritana, Bribery, Te AVhetumarama, Black Prince, and a host of others too numerous to mention. Ada's dam Princess is also clam of Glaukos, Potentate, Symphony, dam of Laccnfeed-Casandra, dam of Opera, Avinner of the Canterbury Derby and dam of that good old horse Tambourine. Coupled with the above Danebury, sire of Templeton, has been a great performer on the turf, having beaten the best horses which New Zealand could then produce. Performances as follows :—As a two-year-old he Avon the Canterbury Champagne Stakes, and ran second to Guy FaAvkes for the Railway Plate, as a three-year-old he Avon the Railway Plate at Canterbury, _ mile, Guy FaAvkes second ; ran second to Guy for the Canterbury Cup, 2|- miles, Aveight for ago ; the following day won tho Christchurch Plato, Aveight for age, 2 miles, carrying Tibs penalty, defeating a large field, time 3 mins. 44 sees. ; at Auckland ran second to Perfume for the Racing Club Handicap, giving her two years and lOlbs; Avon Auckland Derby, and ran second to Ariel for the Cup, Ariel 4 years, Bst 2lbs, Danebury 3 years, 7st 121b ; at Dunedin March Meeting ran second to Poreri for the Derby, leaving behind him Fallacy, Bribery, Hippocampus, and seven others ; as a five-year-old, carrying top Aveight, Avon Waitaki Cup, County Plate, Jockey Club Handicap, Champagne Stakes; at Geraldine Avon the Cup and Handicap, carrying Ost, top Aveight; at Ashburton Avon the Cup, Avith top Aveight; at the Canterbury metropolitan meeting, carrying Bst 71b, ran second to Mata, three years, Gst olbs, time 3 mins. 45 sees.; ran second to Trump Card for tho Christchurch Plate, after a desperate race cf two miles, giving him 19lbs, time 3 mins. 44 sees. ; at Wairarapa Avon the three miles weight for age, beating Lara and eight others; ran second to Mufter at AVellington in the Jockey Club Handicap. This race he could have won had he been let. At the Canterbury metropolitan meeting Avon the Free Handicap, carrying Ost, beating Foul Play, Camballo, Sinking Fund, Lara, Luna, and others, one mile, time 1 mm. 40 sees, Avon Railway Plate, weight for age, h mile, and Metropolitan Handicap, carrying Bst 41bs, l£ miles, leaving behind him Fish-hook, Ariel, Longlands, Lcatios, Bribery, and others, timo 2 mins. 4G sees. It will be seen by the laurels Avon by this great son of Traduccr that he was both a flyer, a stayer, and a Aveight carrier.
