August 23. Reliable intelligence to hand from Tonquin states that in the recent engagement between the Annamese and French the latter failed to maintain their position, ancl suffered a repulse by the native troops.
Tho news of the French reverse has caused great excitement in China, and a serious affray has occurred at Canton, during which a coolie was shot dead by a European. Placards in the Chinese language have been posted in Canton urging the Chinese to rise and massacre the European barbarians.
