ARCHBISHOP VAUGHAN'S DEATH.
KING ALFONSO'S TOUR THROUGH SPAIN. VICTORIAN DEFENCE APPOINTMENTS. IMPERIAL AUTHORITIES APPROVE ARMED VESSELS FOR QUEENSLAND. THE VICEROY OF IRELAND VISITS CORK. A BRITISH MISSIONARY IN MADAGASCAR ACCUSED OF COMPLICITY. LONDON. August 20. Archbishop Vaughan, of Sydney, was found dead in bed on Sunday morning, at the residence of Mr Weld, at Blundell, near Liverpool. The Right Rev. Herbert Vaughan, Bishop of Salford, was the first to find his brother (Archbishop Vaughan) dead. The Archbishop complained of being unwell during the voyage from America to Liverpool. King Alfonso, in his tour through the disturbed provinces of Spain, has been received with great enthusiasm, especially in the South. The following further appointments in the Victorian defence force have been made: —Staff Officer of Artillery, Major Walker of the Royal Artillery ; Staff Officer of the Infantry, Captain Fellowos of the Ist Battalliou of the East Surrey Regiment; Battery Commander, Lieutenant Ind of the Royal Artillery. The British Government, fearing difficulties in the Punjaub in connection with the projected visit of the Maharajah Dupleep Singh, have induced him to postpone it. In the sculling race, over the champion course, for £200 a-side and the championship, George Bubear beat Largan by four lengths. August 21. The Hon. Evelyn Ashley, Under- Seoretay for the Colonies, has intimated that the action of the Queensland Government in ordering armed vessels has been approved by the Imperial Government. Earl Spencer, Lord-Lieutent of Ireland, has visited Cork, where he received a most respectful reception. Mr Shaw, the British missionary at Tamatave, is accused by the French authorities with complicity with the Hovas.
