It is satisfactory to learn through our parliamentary intelligence tho survey parly, under Mr Williams, has discovered a fairly practicable route for a railway line from Napier to Taupo.

The trustees of the estate of the late Karaitiana, the Hon. J. N. Wilson and Mr J. Sheehan, paid yesterday the rates, amounting to £40, owing on the old Maori Club, White road. This Avas one of tho sections advertised for sale by tho Corporation,

Mr A. McLean has scratched Lord of the Isles for the Spring Handicap, not being satisfied Avith tho Avcight. Lord of the Isles is a thvee-yoav-old, and was Aveightedat 7st Gibs, which simply meant, in the opinion of his oAvner, that lie Avould not be in the race.

Branchman Holland met Avith a nasty accident at the practice of the toAvn Fire Brigade last night. It appears he gave tho signal too precipitously to turn on the high pressure Avater, and, not having proper command over the branch he Avas holding, it oscillated Avith such force as to throw him, and inflicted such injuries to his right arm as Avill incapacitate him for Avork for a day or two.

The first fifteen of the Napier Football Club will play tho country team at the recreation ground to-morroAV, and thesecond fifteen go by Hit morning train to play a return match Avith the Native College at Te Ante. An attempt was made on Tuesday night last to break into the stable in Avhich Mr R. Wclhvood, of Hastings, keeps his thorough-bred draught stallion. Tho perpetrator Avas evidently a bungler at burglary, for, instead of turning the lock of tho door, he only succeeded in so damaging it that, in- the morning, the groom could not enter the stable till the door was taken off its hinges. It Avas thought the object of breaking into the stablo was to injure or poison tho horse.

A number of friends of Mr G. Potts, of the firm of M. R. A correspondent points out what he considers an omission on the part of our sporting contributor " Hippo," as folloAvs :—" I do not at all .agree with Hippo's striccures on tho Jockey Club's handicapper, "more especially with Avhat ho says about Foul Play being " chucked in." But Ido think '-Hippo might have said something severe about the Avcights to bo carried by Mr Douglas' Briar, and Mr A. McLean's lona. Both horses are three-year-olds, and neither has run on a course, yet Briar is made to carry 7st 31b, and lona Gst 9lb. Can tho handicapper explain Avhy the best bred horse of tho two has to carry Slbs less than the other f"

Kaikora has just had a slight bit of excitement. Some persons in the township, having heard that a lately-arrived resident had recently married a wife, determined to serenade him after the customary fashion. Those who Avcnt out cheerfully enough, came back sorrowful, and are hoav inclined to Avish that the custom of serenading a newly-married couple had been "more honored in the breach than in tho observance." In other words, the bandsmen met Avith a Avarm reception, in the shape, avc hear, of half-bricks, hurled from behind the fence round the serenaded couple's house. Some of the brickbats made acquaintance Avith the heads of tho scrcnaders, and black eyes, dislodged teeth, scalp Avounds, Sec, became more common than acceptable, the musicians being disastrously routed. We hardly knoAV which is the most objectionable practice—throwing brickbats or beating pots and kettles in a serenade.

The. joint debate betAVcen the Clive Square and Napier Mutual Improvement Associations took place last night. There was a good attendance of members and visitors, who sheAved their appreciation by frequent applause. Mr J. S. Welsman Avas voted to tho chair, and announced the subject for debate to be "Is the present education system conducive to the moral aa*cll being of the country?" The Clive Square Association took the affirmative, and their opponent's the negative. Messrs T. Laws, Williams, Alpers, and Rush opened tho debate, and shewed that morality Avas taught in tho public schools at present, giving various instances from the reading books of lessons inculcating such morals as truth, temperance, honesty, &c. Messrs Haima, J. Sidey, DiiiA\'iddie, and Ellison, Avho supported the negative, contended that, since morality could not be taught Avithout religion, therefore the Bible should be introduced into public schools. A Avarm discussion ensued, in Avhich several members took part, and the openers having replied, the chairman summed up. A -roti was then taken, and after some discussion it Avas declared that the negative had carried the day by a majority of tAvo. Such debates as these cannot but kindle a friendly feeling between the tAvo societies, and it is, therefore, to bo hoped that they Avillbe more frequent.

A rather unpleasant accident occurred in Waipawa County on Sunday last. Dr. Mirbach had been summoned to go to Makaretu, and on his journey thither Avas accompanied by the messenger Avho camo for him, an elderly woman named Petersen. Tho doctor and Mrs Peterson rode in a trap as far as the WaipaAva crossing on the road to Makaretu, whore the vehicle had to bo abandoned, as tho banks of the river were too steep to allow tho descent of a Avhoeled carriage. Dr. Mirbach offered to let Mrs Peterson ride across, or be carried across by him on horseback, but she refused both offers, and determined to wade. The doctor then caused her to hold one end of the rein, holding the other ' end himself, and rode over by her side as she Avadod the stream. All Avcnt avcll till tho centre stream Avas reached, Avhen Mrs Petersen was carried aAvay by tho force of the torrent, dragging Dr. Mirbach from his horse into tho riA'er also. The doctor and his guide Avere carried a long Avay doAvntho river before the former managed to struggle out, and to rescue his companion. The latter was nearly dead, being completely insensible, and Dr. Mirbach, avlio fortunately had restorativos and medicines in a small case in his coat pocket, had great difficulty in restoring animation. After succeeding in bringing back Mrs Petersen to the hind of the living, the doctor had to catch his horse, put his unfortunate companion and himself on the animal's back, aud ride some mile or so to the residence of Mr Rhodes. At the latter place the unfortunate Avoman was attended to with great kindness, and the doctor, after a change of clothing, rode off again to sco his patient.

No article, imported or otherwise, which is alleged to possess similar ingredient to Wotj*e's Schnapps, is aught else than a pernicious humbug. The public will bo guided accordingly and shun the trap.— [Advt.J
