THE DUNEDIN GAOL ENQUIRY.
Dunedin, This day,
At the gaol inquiry yesterday nearly all the day was occupied in going over the prison punishement book, and noting a number of cases in which extra sentences were given. It is intended to ask the visiting justices to explain if they please. Many of the cases were those of shortsentenced prisoners, who only a day or two before they ought to have left the gaol were brought before tho visiting justices, and received in some cases double their original sentences, for such charges as idleness, &c. A charge against a prisoner for an offence committed in February was shown to have been held over till May, and in several cases there was an interval of a month or so.
