In the House of Lords last night Earl Carnavon, referring in the course of his speech to the proposed annexation of New Guinea, strongly urged the Government to accede to the request of the Australian colonies, and declared that the annsxation of tho island by Great Britain would ultimately be inevitable. In the House- of Lords to-day Earl Granville stated, in reply to a question, that tho Government had reason to believe that the French Government were disposed to grant reparation for the outrage on British officials and naval officers in Madagascar. Communications were, his Lordship added, passing between the two Governments on the subject.

At a meeting of tho British shipowners held in London to-day a resolution was passed condemning as one-sided tho agreement concluded between Count de Lesseps for the construction of a second Suez canal. The resolution further declared that England's position was in no way improved by the agreement.
