LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Friday. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. IJIH.S. The New Zealand University Act Amendment Bill was read a second time. The Prisons Bill and tlio Tenants' Fixture* Bill were read ii iirsfc time. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. ' Friday. The House met at 2.30 p.m. TAIAEOA LA.XD BILL. The Taiaroa Land Bill was read a second time. CONTRADICTION. Mr George gave emphatic contradiction to a statement in the DuncdiuTemperance Herald thut, members of Parliament having failed to pay thoir accounts, it necessitated a large annual vote to maintain Bellamy's Hiuce that place existed. Mr George said that only ono account, .CO, owed by a member who had died during the recess •was unpaid. LEAVE OF AHSKXCE. Further leave of absence for a week was granted to Mr Dodson. QUESTIONS. Replying to questions, Ministers said to introduce the American check system for railway luggage would cost £4000 or .€•3000, and therefore it was not done ; the detective service was considered useful; nothing as yet was being done towards establishing a naval training school ; extensive plantations of valuable trees had been made on railway reserves ; the Borough Council of Napier would bo ousted from their present premises to provide better accommodation for the Deeds Department; as the toll on the Otira road did not recoup the "Westland County Council what it spent on the road, the Government would not interfere to reduce the tolls ; it -was intended to connect Mangapu post-office with Whangiirei by telephone ;if Mr Macdonald, of South Canterbury, was retained as Sheep Inspector, another person would have to be engaged to do the work under the Rabbit Act. XEW Jjiixy. The following now bills wore read a first time : —Licensing Act Amendment (Fish), Selection of Licensing Committees (Steward). THE UANKBUI'I'CY BILL. The House then Avent into committees on the Bankruptcy Bill, which occupied the whole of the remainder of the sitting. The whole of tho night sitting was occupied in committee on tho Bankruptcy Bill. Ono hundred and seventy-two clauses had been passed without substantial alteration, when progress was reported, and the House rose at 12.10.
