DEATH OF AIR JOSEPH HEDLEY.

We regret to hear of tho death of Jos 3ph Hcdley, a well-known sheep drover, and whose residence was in Milton road, Nap:er. It appears that Hedley and a man named Willis were taking a drove of sheep from the Oringi to Petane. They got as far as Mr Harding's paddock, the other side of the Waipawa river, on Saturday night, chid slept at Nicholson's Railway Hotel. On Sunday morning at 6.30 o'clock they left before breakfast to get the sheep across. Both men worked the whole morning in water, and got another drover named Blank to help them. The sheep were very troublesome to cross, and at about 3 p.m. Hedley fell in the river exhausted. He was taken to the hotel, and was attended to by Dr. Todd, who administered hot bottleg to his feet, but he never rallied, and died about 8.30 p.m. The deceased was a steady, trustworthy man, and highly respected throughout tho jirovince. He leaves a widow and two children to mourn his loss. Our Waipawa correspondent informs uSv that Hedley was yesterday engaged driving sheep across the Waipawa river. The sheep were troublesome, and nibnbers had to be carried across the several s breams by Hedley and his two mates. The weather was bitterly cold, with a high wind blowing, and after some hours' work Hedley succumbed from the combined effects of cold and exposure, his lower limbs being completely benumbed. He was takon to tho Imperial Hotel, and every means were used for his recovery, but he gradually sank and-4 died. There will be no inquest, as Dr—, Todd attended tho deceased and cortificcr v te the cause of death.
