Messrs G. R. Beamish, N. E. Beamish, W. Heslop, W. Shrimpton, and F. J. Watorhouse have been elected to constitute the Road Board for the Okawa district. Our Wairoa correspondent telegraphs that the delegates to the Foresters district meeting arrived at Wairoa by the steamer Manaia this morning. They will be entertained at dinner at the Clyde Hotel tonight. Pheasants are reported to be very scarce in the open country, and sportsmen will have to hug the bush to get good bags. "We hear of one or two shooting parties being made up to give Taupo a visit, where game is said to be plentiful. The final heat of the season amongst the boats of the Hawke's Bay Sailing Club, for the trophy presented by Mr J. 11. Vautier, will take place in the roadstead on Saturday afternoon, over the previous course, starting from off the Pier-heads at 2.30 p.m. Venison from the Wairarapa is occasionally to be had at Wellington, but owing to bail cooking, and want of knowledge on the subject of the treatment of the meat to make it "ripe "for the tabic, an adverse judgment lias been passed on the dish. What Goths they must be at Wellington ! There are only sixteen prisoners in the Napier gaol, namely, eleven hard-labor men, one woman, and four persons awaiting trial. This time last year there were between sixty and seventy prisoners here. The number was reduced by a draft to Lvttclton, but a notable feature of this year's returns is the absence of serious crime in the district. Tongariro i.s iv an unusual state of active eruption. An immense column of smoke is issuing from tho crater, but no flame has been seen. Thirteen years ago a similar eruption occurred, which was distinctly visible from Napier ; it is, perhaps, owing to the cloudy atmosphere we aro now having that the great volcanic pall is not now to be secu hanging over the Ruahinc ranges. The winter entertainments at the Working Men's Club are about to be resumed, the first taking place on Saturday evening at 8.30. This will be followed by weekly entertainments on Saturday evenings, and on alternate Wednesdays. These reunions at the club have become very popular, and wo have no doubt but that the ensuing season will be as successful as its predecessors. As usual the weekly meeting of the Napier Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association will be held this evening in St. Paul's school room, when an essay will bo given on Thomas Hood by one of the members, after Avhich illustrations of the diffcrerent styles of the poet's writings will be rendered by other members. The programme is sufficiently attractive to warrant a good attendance. MrW. Villers, of Petane, has just received direct from London a consignment of 5000 of the new corrugated Bogardus glass balls, also several traps embracing all the latest improvements. The advantage of the corrugated ball is that it infallibly breaks when struck by the marksman, a quality not possessed by the smooth surfaced ball, which not infrequently allowed the shot to glide oft it, with the result that often a "miss" was scored when probably a "hit" was made. There was a good muster of the Artillery and Rifle Volunteers at the drill-shed last night for inspection by Major Routledge, who complimented the men upon the perfect state of their arms and accoutrements. The parade state was—Staff, Major Routledge, Lieut, Pell, N.A.V. (Adjutant), Drill-Instructor Nelson, and Scrgt.-Major Fox; Artillery, Lieut. Ross and 40 rank and file; Rifles, Captain Blythe, Lieut. King, and 15 rank and file ; Band, 1G men ; total of all ranks, 114.

At the annual general meeting of the Napier Football Club, held- last evening, the folloAving officers Avere elected for the ensuing season : —-Presidents, Messrs C. C. Murray and F. Logan : captain, Mr J. W. Begg ;" deputy-captain, Mr F. Kennedy ; honL secretary and treasurer, Mr F. Fulton. Committee: Messrs F. Parker, C. 11. St. Hill, 11. F. Gibbons, R. A. D. MoAvbray, and C. D. Kennedy. A number of iicav members Avere also elected, and the opening game of the season avus fixed for Saturday. Arrangements have been made by Avhich practice meetings and matches will take place on the Recreation Company's ground. In the AvindoAV of a certain tonsorial artist in Hastings-street thero is displayed the following legend Avritteu in clear round hand on a sheet of white paper:— What do you think ? I'll shave you for nothing And give you a drink. Whether the obliging barber supplies his customers xvitli three star Henncssy, "Johnny Walker," SAyan's sparkling ale, or the beA-cragc of our first parents, docs not transpire, but w.e have no doubt that, apart from any consideration as to the denomination of'the "tipple" in stock, a "free razor" will And pretty constant employment. The annual general meeting of the WaipaAva Ploughing Match Association avus held in the OddfelloAvs' Hall, WaipaAva, last evening. After the minutes of last general meeting wore confirmed, the balance-sheet avus adopted as read. The Association commences operations this year with a balance of £-15 to their credit. A letter Avas read from the Hawke's Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society, stating that that body Avould give a cup valued at £10 10s as a prize to the champion ploughman at the Waipavva County ploughing match. The following persons Avere elected a committee: —Messrs Gow, Scrimgcour, Robb, Corskie, Peebles, Jones, Dillon, Watts, White, London, McGreevy, J'i'aliburton, Gaisford, Logan, and Baker. Mr R, Monteith was re-elected secretary and treasurer, aud Messrs Ewen and Goldsmith as auditors. The annual subscription to the Association >vas fixed at £1. The meeting concluded Avith A-otes of thanks to the chairman, MrD. Guy. Mr Parker, tiie secretary of the Victorian United Licensed Victuallers' Association, has on several occasions (writes the Argus) pointed out that the manfacture of forged labels and of casos bearingfraudulent brands is carried on to a very large extent in Melbourne, Recently he stated the facts Avithin his knowledge in the form of queries. "Who uses,"" he asked, "the scores of JDKZ boxes, made and branded iv a Melbourne suburb? Who manufactures and Avho uses the forged labels and capsules that are produced and absorbed by thousands in the metropolis ? Why do empty casks of Martell, Henncssy, &c., bring such high prices, aud what arc they re-tilled Avithr" Mr Parker thinks that theso questions in-

dicate a sphere of duty in which half-a-dozen first-class men might do the State much service, and we are decidedly of the same opinion. One hundred and seventy thousand Chinese die annually from the use of opium, and as ~\ many of the Anglo-Saxon race from dyspepsia, brought on by the abuse of liquor, tobacco, and quack medicines. Many people dig their graves with their teeth ; more die from bad drink than starvation. By using - only the pure teas sold by Professor Moore, of the Medical Hall, Waipawa, made up in lib packets, and sold at 2s, 2s Gd, and 3s each, sturdy health and long life may both be secured. —[Advt.] Terrible damaging to tho system are •~" those fiery compounds of cheap unrectified spirits, surcharged with fusel oil, which nefarious vendors and importers either insinuate or openly declare to be equal to Wolfe's Schnapps.—[Advt."|
