ANGLICAN CHURCH GENERAL SYNOD.
The session of the ninth General Synod of the English Episcopal Church was opened in St. John's school-room yesterday afternoon, the Most Rev. the Bishop of Christchurch, Primate, presiding. There were also present tho Right Revs, the Bishops of Auckland. Dunedin, Nelson. AVaiapu. and AVellinut'-n, the Dean of Christchurch, .Archdcac<;>- AVilliams. Harris. Harper, .Utiles. Clarke, and Muuusel, the Revs. R. A. Iviil-ham. A. R, Fitchett, S. AVilliams, j-*. J. Jones, < '. Jordan, AY. Ronaldson, and Messrs J. P. Pierce. E. Quick, M. R. Miller, 11. S. Titfen, H. A. Banner, S. B. AVhite, R. A. Paselv, li. T. Clark, J. H. Sheath, A. J. Cotrerill, J. B. Fielder, J. B. A. Acland, J. E. Parker, T. M. Haultain, and T. Tanner. The Synod having been constituted iv the usual manner, the Primate delivered his opening address, in which he adverted to the union of the Anglo-Saxon and Maori races, the business ordered by tho Synod of ISBO, the status of the Melanesian mission in the Synod, also the question of marriage with a deceased wife's sister, aud of tho remarriage of divorced persons. Tlio address concluded by an appeal to the church urging increased exertion towards obtaining religious education for children attending the State schools, and pointing out further the good that might be expected to result from the establishment of an Evangelistic Mission in New Zealand. On the motion of the Bishop of Nelson a vote of thanks was accorded to the Primate for his address. The following officers were appointed : —Clerical Secretary, the Rev. AY. Ronaldson ; Lay Secretary, Air Thomas Tanner : Chairman of Committees, Colonel Haultaii.- ; Treasurer, Air AL R, Miller. It was ordered that the Synod meet each afternoon from 3.30 o'clock to 6, aud each evening from 7.-50 to 11 o'clock. Air W. Parker presented a petition from certain parishioners of Riecarton, complaining of the separation of their parish, and the forming of the separated part into another parish, together with tho surrounding district. The petition was received. Several notices of motion having been given, the Synod adjourned. In the evening a choral service was held in St. John's Church, when the Bishop of AVellington preached a sermon on the position of the church in New Zealand and the duties of the clergy. The Synod will resume its sitting at !3.00 o'clock this afternoon.
