THE HARBOR BOARD ELECTIONS.
[To the Editoh or the Daily Tei.egr.U'H.] Sin, —In reading over the list of gentlemen nominated for election to the Harbor Board it is gratifying to find the name of one gentleman Avho is so largely connected with the shipping interest, and who must really be in earnest in wanting a good harbour. I allude to Mr Balharry. That gentleman is an old resident in the town, and has always been connected with the shipping interest, and he is now the local agent of the New Zealand Shipping Company. One or two seasons have occurred to me why the ratepayers should be sure and return Mr Balharry as a member. 1. The great influence that can be brought to bear by the company during the passage of a Harbour Bill through Parliament. 2. It wtis through the action of the Shipping Company in breaking 1 up the coal, monopoly which had existed for so many years in Napier, that we are now blessed with cheap coal. I must say that for this one action the company deserves the best thanks of the community. 3. The knowledge in respect to shipping that Mr Balharry must have gained by his long connection with that interest would be of great value at the Board meetings. -i! It is to the interest of the Shipping Company to obtain a first-class harbour at Napier, one that will be easy of access, and ■where the ltirg-ost vessels can lay along-side ti wharf. •3. The company, not being wedded to any particular site in Napier, ou account of their stores, as their premises tire only leasehold, we may be sure their agent will not be found burking- any scheme which the judges may decide is best, simply because it may necessitate the company erecting other stores perhaps half a mile or a mile away. With these few remarks I will close, trusting the ratepayers will study the true interest of the town, and place Mr Balharry at the head of the poll.—l am, kc, Bluff. Napier, February 10th, 1883.
