CHRISTCHURCH.

This day. At the Police Court yesterday the Kaiapoi Borough Council proceeded under the 124 th section of the Municipal Corporations Act against C. E. Dudley, their ex-Town Clerk, to recover certain rate books, &c, which had been in his charge. It was also alleged that several receipts had been given for rates, the money not being accounted for. Dudley, through his solicitor, replied that he had no books or papers, having left them in the office when he was suspended. Mr Nalder wished to put Dudley in the witness box for the defence, but the Bench would nut allow it. The Bench were unable to agree, and adjourned the case for a fortnight, hoping that in the meantime Dudley would come to some arrangement with the Council. He had been fairly treated by the Mayor, and on his own conduct would depend the nature of the order the Bench would make.

A child of five years, named Alfred Eurz, fell into a creek at Brookside last week and Avas drowned.

The cabmen having refused to take out licenses under the new bye-laws were all ordered oft" the stands by the City Council yesterday. They accordingly took their cabs off, and have determined not to bring them out any more till the difficulty is settled.
