This day. Some time ago £800 worth of jewellery was stolen from a passenger on the steamer Wellington, and several members of the crew were committed for trial on the charge. To-day £40 worth of the jewellery was found by the police in an oil can on board the steamer. A. fire "broke out in Pitt-street ycsterrltiy on the premises of Mr Gordon, grocer, through the upsetting of a kerosene lamp. The shop was gutted, aud 3tr Cox's stockin the shop next door was damaged also. The block is insured by the owner in the South British for £1000. 3lr Gordon is insured for £150 on his stock and £75 on his furniture. 3lr Cox's stock is insured for £5000. George Olsen has been committed for trial for the attempted murder of his wife, Elizabeth Olsen. A man named James Thornley has been drowned at Northern Wairoa while watering horses in the Mongonui Creek. A man named Alexander Cochrane died from sunstroke yesterday while working on a railway cutting at Mercury Bay. A busliman named Cunningham attempted suicide at Northern Wairoa by stabbing himself in the neck and breast. He said his mate Patteson, who was drowned some time back in Northern Wairoa, had instigated him to do it. Cunningham had been drinking. In Chambers yesterday 3lr Justice Gillies st;i.ted that, in cases where debtors conceal any of their creditors' names by omitting them from the schedule, and obtain their discharge without the omission being repaired, the concealed liability holds good, and the creditor may seek to recover when he can.
