The Daily Telegraph. TUESDAY, JANUARY 2, 1883.

A\ r E commence the new year by presenting the Daily Telegraph to its readers in an enlarged and improved form. This is the fourth time since the establishment of the paper that it has become necessary to increase the size of the sheet. We can produce no better evidence than the above fact of the support and patronage that we have received. The paper has enlarged its circulation and size with the growth and prosperity of the town and country districts. At the end of this month the Daily Telegraph will have had an existence of twelve years ; and we think we may say, without fear of contradiction, that during that period it has steadfastly kept in view the principles upon which it was started. In IS7I there was not an independent journal in Hawke's Bay, and it was to supply such a want that this paper was established. Throughout the time that has elapsed the columns of this journal have been by a fearless expression of opinion which, though giving offence- to a few, has been appreciated and valued by the many. Our endeavor has been to cater for the people-to greatest good f< >r th c greatest number. That we have succeeded in gaining the esteem of the general public, and we trust the respect of those whomwehavehadattimesto oppose, may be accepted by the fact that, at this moment, the Daily' Telegraph has not only the largest circulation of any journal published on the East Coast, but that it exercises an influence for good that lias made itself felt in the exposure of abuses, and in the encouragement of all that has tended to advance the progress and prosperity of this provincial district. Our readers may rest assured that no efforts shall be wanting on our part to maintain the proud position to which this journal lias attained, and with these few 'remarks we beg to tender our hearty thanks to the public, for the generous support they have accorded us.
