WELLINGTON.

December 19

To-morrow is the last day for sending in the property tax statements. It is understood that all posted to-morrow will be received, and that the penalties will be strictly enforced thereafter. The ship Pleione has cleared for London with a cargo of wool, tallow, skins, flax, and preserved and salt meats, valued at £72.656. Amongst the cargo is ten casks of salt beef prepared according to the Admiralty sample for navy use by the Gears Meat Preserving Company. The house of Thomas Jacobson, labourer, Mauriceville, has been burned down, everything being destroyed. There was no insurance. It is proposed to entertain Mr Archibald Forbes at a public banquet on Saturday evening. The body of Mr Joseph Saunders, aged 80, the father of Mr Joseph Saundere, the well-known contractor, was found this morning in about two feet of water close-to the railings of the Te Aro baths. He appeared to have been several hours in the water. There was a slight cut over the left temple. The deceased gentleman was in the habit of taking long solitary walks late at night, and the wharf was a favorite place with him. It is supposed that he must have fallen over accidentally, and probably struck his head against some of the timbers.

Some time was occupied at tbe E.M. Court yesterday in arguing the question whether or not a magistrate possessed power to reinstate a case which be bad struck out owing to the non-appearance of either plaintiff or defendant. Shortly after tbe commencement of the civil business the adjourned case of Barrett v. Edmonds was called on, but in consequence of neither party appearing Mr Hardcastle struck it out. A few moments afterwards Mr Ollivier, tbe counsel for the plaintiff, entered, and on learning the position of affaire applied that the case should be re-instated. His Worship replied that he was not aware that he possessed authority to comply with the request, but if Mr Ollivier would show him that he bad be would have much pleasure in granting the application. Mr Ollivier argued the point at considerable length, backing up his contention with quotations from well-known legal authorities. His Worship was not, however, convinced, and declined to reinstate the case.

Mr Bryce has reserved an answer from Wabanui to hie letter. The reply is very brief. Wahanui disclaims on behalf of himself and his people any idea of throwing Tawhiao overboard. Ho says that Mr Bryse's words shall have due consideration, but does not intirrate any intention of calling a native meeting.
