The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone has received numerous congratulatory letters and addresses on the jubilee of his parliamentary lite. He was first elected (in the Conservative interest) for Newark at the general election in December, 1832. •
December 14. A serious fire broke out last night at Hampton Court, and it is still burning, all effort to stay the progress of the flames having so far proved unsuccessful. The whole of the east end of the building hae been destroyed, and it is feared that further destruction will result. Earl Derby addressed a large public meeting at Manchester last evening. In the course of his speech he referred at length to the Egyptian question, and repudiated the idea of an English force remaining in Egy.pt a moment looger V- than was necessary. Afresh and heavy fall of snow has been experienced in the west and north of England, and traffic is entirely suspended in several places. Two men named Byrne and Hanlon, described as artisans, have been arrested for the murder of Lord Frederick Cavendiah and Mr Burke in May list. Later. The fire at Hampton Court has now been subdued. The destruction has been confined to the private apartments of the palace, all public portions having been saved.
