ORMONDVILLE.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) December 9, 1882.

A well attended public meeting was held here last evening to take steps for forming a library. There was a good deal of interest shown in the meeting favorable to the establishment of a library, and a good committee was chosen to canvass for subscriptions and take other necessary steps to accomplish the object. Mr C. A. Rogers was appointed secretary, and Mr J. J. Browne treasurer.

For some time past several amateurs have been preparing to give a performance in aid of some laudable object, and tbe want of a suitable hall has prevented the production of tbe pieces selected ; but as a hall with every accommodation is now near completion, we may soon hope to see our " stars" before the scenes. A meeting haß been held, and a dramatic club formed for the purpose of giving a series of entertainments for various objects, and I hear their first appearance •will be about Christmas time, and a piece entitled " The Broken Merchant," a temperance drama in three acts, by the same author as "Ten Nights in a Barroom," will be their first production. If the club have not yet decided to what object the proceeds are to go, I would respectfully remind them of the efforts being made to establish a library, and the immediate necessity for funds. The transit of Venus was plainly visible here from sunrise, and many persons availed themselves of the opportunity of observing it. A meeting is to be held at Norsewood this evening to consider the propriety of starting a cheese and bacon factory. Mi Gakinp, of Woodville, is tbe promoter of the meeting, and will attend and explain how dividends are to be obtained. I fear, however, the project is too premature.

Many of your readers will no doubt regret to hear of the death of Mr Williams, of Makatoka, for many years guard on the railway. He had obtained leave of absence, and was at Nelson under medical treatment; but, not making any improvement, his wife was wired for, and she left here last Friday week, but her husband passed away the day before she reached Nelson.

The settlers at Norsewood entertained Mr Levy and family at a farewell tea meeting in the school-room on Wednesday last. There was a good attendance, and the several speakers regretted the departure of Mr Levy, and hoped the change would soon restore Mrs Levy to health. In reply Mr Levy thanked the company for their kindly expressions, and said it was only by medical advice he was removing his family, but that he would be in the district for some months yet himself. On Wednesday evening next a farewell tea and presentation is to be given to Mr Levy by the settlers of Orraondville and Norsewood at Orraoud■ville in the Friendly Societies Hall.
