NATIVE MEETING AT KAWHIA.

Tawhiao had a meeting last Friday with the people of Kawhia. The whole of the Kawhia chiefs were present except Hone te One, WhareWhara, and Wharoa, from Aotea ; and Te Kauawa and several others from the southern side of Kawhia. Tawhiao addressed the meeting as follows : —" Listen to my words. I have three •words for you to hear. The first, love; the second, good feeling; and the third, faith, good feeling to strangers who may visit at this place. Speak kindly to them. Do not show any unkindness, but show good feeling to strangers when they come to Kawhia. This is all I have to say in reference to this matter. [By " strangers " Tawhiao meant Europeans.] I have another word to say to you. This is that on the day on which I will travel through the island the only people I want to accompany me are Kawhia chiefs residing between Marekopu and Waikato Heads on the coast. From Alexandria I intend proceeding to Aottroa ; thence to Taupo ; thence to Rotoaiara; thence to Manawatu and Rangitikei; thence to Otaki; thence along the coast towards Wellington ; thence back to Wairarapa ; thence to Napier —returning by way of Taupo to our homes. I do not want inland (Whatiwlratihoe) chiefs to go with me. The tribes I want to accompany me are Ngatimahuta, from Kawhia ; Ngatimaniapoto, from Marekopa; Ngati Hikairo and Ngati Hana, from Aotea ; and the Ngatimahanga, Ngati Hourua, Tirinui, and Ngatitanunga chiefs. These tribes alone I desire to go with me. No one of you will on any condition carry arms. That is all.' Referring to his late meeting with Mr Bryce, Tawhiao said: In private I do nO(----think any worse of Mr Bryce for his straightforward speaking, for he spoke as one man to the other. The only thing I felt grieved about was his leaving me in the manner he did, for I think tho least he could have done •was to have shaken hands with me. Perhaps, however, this eccentricity is due to his European breeding.
