The Napier licensing , meetings will bo held to-iuorrow (Friday) at the Court House at noon. Mr W. A. Beecroft has leased that wellknown hostelry at Hasting h, the Railway Hotel, to Mr John Tuck, late of Masterton, Wairarapa. Messrs Glendining and Griffin are the successful tenderers for the erection of the new premises for the Colonial Banking , Company at the corner of Hastings and Browning-streets. The shark mentioned in last evening's issue as having been chased into the inner lagoon from the Iron Pot, where it was disporting itself in the forenoon, was captured later on and brought up to town, where it was exhibited. The monster measured over nine feet in length. The atmosphere being clear, and the sky almost cloudless, a good view of the transit of Venus across the sun's disc was to be had in town this morning about 6.30 o'clock, and number of people watched with interest the phenomenon. The next transit wil not j take place till June 8, 2004. We learn that the Bank of New Zealand has purchased the corner section opposite Murphy's hotel, Wood ville, fora site for their new bank, an excellent position. The establishment of a bank in that important township has been a want long felt, as there is a large and increasing amount of business being done in the surrounding district. The concert that was to have been held in St. John's schoolroom this evening in aid of the Schteffler relief fund has been postponed until to-morrow evening. Amongst other amateurs who have promised to take part are Miss Ada Baugh, Master Hegh, and Mesprs Lankjer, Rose, Gregory, and others. Mrs Robinson has kindly consented to play the accompaniments. Addresses will be delivered by the Rev. Dβ Berdt Hovell and Mr R. C. Harding. The peculiarity of Cr. Ellison's c-urse of action ia the Council is its spontaneity. He seldom or never agrees with anybody or anything, but nothing is ever proposed but what he is immediately ready with an amendment. When he himself has anything to propose he consults no one, and no one is prepared to follow him. The result of this procedure is sometimes amufiing, and it seems a settled thing now to let his motions or his amendments lapse for want of a seconder. His notice of motion to increase the rates by 4d in the £ will have the fate that has befallen so many of his previous proposals. The final representation of " Billee Taylor " at the Theatre Royal last night came off in a highly creditable manner, the opera being faithfully carried out in its every detail. The cast of characters was the sairie as on previous occasions, and it is '

needless to say the numerous artistes contributed to the enjoyment of those present in a manner that left nothing to be desired. Between the acts Mise Florence Lewis played Ascber's " Danse Negre " in brilliant style, and was loudly applauded. An encore was demanded for the double hornpipe at the opening of the second act. Tonight Charles Lecosq'a romantic opera " La Fille de Madame Angot " will be performed, when we anticipate a crowded house, this opera being one of the choicest in the company's repertoire. The season positively closes in Napier to-morrow evening. Pursuant to notice the owners and occupiers of property in Emerson and Carlylestreets met at the Criterion Hotel laat night. Mr Roohfort was voted to the chair. Mr Bly tha moved, and Mr Hoadley seconded, " That in the opinion of this meeting ifc is very desirable that EmersonBtreet be widened, and with a view to giving practical expression to that opinion, a committee be formed for the purpose of considering the above question, obtaining full information, and drawing up a report with a recommendation to be submitted to a future meeting, similarly constituted to the present." The motion was put and carried unanimously. The following gentlemen were elected a cotninittee to carry out the above object:—Messrs Rochfort, Blytbe, Hoadley, Robjohns, E. Ashtnn, and Lyndon. A vote af thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting. A correspondent of the Evening Poat, who has just visited the Picton colleriea gives the following interesting information as to the work going on :—" The Picton Goal Company has now commenced work in good earnest. The original intention of the shareholders was to have begun by removing the large blocks of coal that had been partially stripped and examined. It was close to the wharf, and from it more than 100 tons had been already taken out and distributed. This block was 14 feet thick at the bottom, and 28 feet high, the breadch exposed being 50 or 60 feet. The mining engineer recently appointed has however condemned this plan as being likely to bring down earthslips from the hill, and prefers a more systematic plan of procedure. He has therefore accepted tenders for sinking a shaft of 60 feet behind the present coal exposure, from which he can drive along the seam -with less inconvenience from water, and less risk of dietnrbicg the surface of the hill. Trial bores have shown that at 54 feet down the coal gets harder, and there is every reason to belive that the next boring will prove that it continues to a very much greater depth still. On the western side of the harbour, at the 350-feet level, the company is now working the 8-feet seam, along the line on which coal has been found at many spots between the high level and the sea, a distance of a mile and a half. The Queen Charlotte Company have followed the line two miles further in the other direction up to their own boundary, and are said to have found coal upon it within their own ground. The Connolly mine is also being worked, and has found coal. The shaft of the Picton Coal Company will soon be finished, when all doubts will be set at rest about the prospects of the company, on the eastern eide of the harbour at any rate." For the sake of the shareholders, no less than the colony, we trust this enterprise will be a success, and those who are the most competent to judge Bee in to be the most sanguine now. " Pomade Vaseline" is the purest and best preparation for the hair extant. It promotee growth and luxuriance, and keeps both the head and hair sweet and clean, besides freeing the scalp from scurf and dandriff. Pomade Vaseline contains no animal matter, and will therefore never become rancid, or render the hair a receptacle for decaying substances. In bottles at Is, Is 6d, and 5s each, at Professor Moore's Medical Hall, Waipawa.—[Advt.] The power of the will has been often the theme of thrilling narratives. Sterne, in his " Tristram Shandy," has given to Uncle Toby the will-power to exercise its epell over Corporal Trim, as he lies desperately low; and in the extraordinary romance of the " Wandering Jew " by Eugene Sue, all have seen how Monsieur Robin, by his strong volition, grappled with his archenemy, the Asiatic Cholera. Doubtless the will has fortified many against the sieges of disease, but its extremest potency falls short of the efficacy of Udolpho Wolfe's Sohiedam Abomatic Schnapps.—[Advt.]
