Sir Hknhy Pauke", the Premier of New South Wales, aud Dr. Kenwick, Minister of Mines, have been defeated in the contested election for East Sydney. Mr Reid, the leader of the Opposition, is one of the successful candidates, and Mr McElbone is another. The other two are new names to us. Mr Reid is a journalist, and Mr McElhooe is a

butcher. This is not the first time that Sir Henry has been defeated f#r East Sydney. Three years ago he found himself at the bottom of the poll, and had to seek for a seat in Parliament by standing for a country constituency. His recent visit to England, and his reception there in the " highest circles " have not made him more popular in the capital of New South Wales. His Ministry, it will be remembered, was defeated on the second reading of the Land Bill, the most important measure be introduced on meeting Parliament on his return from the old country. Hence the present elections. Sir Henry Parkes has had a most eventful career. Commencing life as a toy-maker, he had not arrived long in the colony before be started a newspaper called the Empire. This proved an unfortunate venture, and he took to his old trade for a short time, but soon afterwards re-entered into newspaper business and politics. After many ups and downs he raised himself to the highest offices in tbe colony, and received the honor of Knighthood. His present defeat at East Sydney is only a circumstance in the life of a politician, and he will have no difficulty in finding a country constituency only too glad to return him to Parliament.
