A disastrous fire occurred to-day at Whitelys well known shops in Westbourne Grove. The damage is estimated at £100,000. The trial of another of the prisoners concerned in the murder of the Joyce family At Maantrasna, County Galway, in August last, was concluded to-day, a verdict of guilty being returned by the jury, and sentence of death was passed upon tbe prisoner. A report is current to-day that the cargo of frozen mutton per steamship Marsala, which left Dunedin on the 22nd September last, was jettisoned near Java owing to tbe refrigerating machinery having broken down. November 18. Sir Stafford Northcote started to-day on a health cruise to the south of Europe, and expects to be absent from England for two months.
Her Majesty the Queen reviewed all the troops which have returned from Egypt at the Horse Guards to-day. The various regiments afterwards marched through Piccadilly and Whiteball, receiving an ovation from an immense concourse of people assembled along the route. The Peninsula and Oriental Steam Navigation Company has declared a dividend of 3£ per cent for the last halfyear, together with a bonus of 2 per cent.
It i 3 officially announced to-day that Mr William McArthur (Lord Mayor of London in 1880-81) and Mr Thomas Mcllwraith (Premier of Queensland) have been created Knight Commanders of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. Mr William John Clarke of Melbourne, is created a baronet.
