WELLINGTON.
October 21. Up to last evening the secretary of the New Zealand 'Rifle Association had received tbe following entries ."—Auckland, 14; Taranaki, 3 ; Patea, 1 ; Wanganui, 26 ; Marton, 2 ; Wellington, 51; Greytown, 1; Napier, 6 ; Gisborne, 2 ; Thames, 11; Nelson, 14; Marlborough, 13; Christchurch, 9. From places south of Canterbury information has been received of a large number of entrances from Oamaru, the Lakes, Invercargill, &c, but as these names will be included in the Dunedin list the number of entries cannot be determined at present. The entries do not finally close until the 28th inst. Tbe Government are making arrangements for the observation of the transit of Venus. It is probable that there will be three stations in Wellington, one being at the Te Aro end of the city, and tbe second in the Wairarapa district. The site for the third has not yet been definitely decided upon. The English observation party are expected to arrive in Christchurch in November, and will probably fix upon Burnham as their station. Young Worth and the girl Davis, who were recently convicted of indecent behaviour in tbe Botanical Gardens, have been released pending the result of an appeal against the verdict. The ground of appeal is that the evidence adduced did not warrant a conviction in point of law.
