October 19. A meeting was held to-day, at which twenty.one captains of vessels now in port were present, to consider the rates for freight upon wool, and they unanimously resolved that no wool should be taken on board at a lower rate than £d to f d per pound, pending further instructions from owners of vessels. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (limited) held their opening wool sale for the season to-day. Tbe catalogue was fairly representative. The attendance at the sale was very large, and representatives from all parts of Europe and from America were in greater numbers than at any previous sales. Bidding was animated, and brisk competition was experienced, nearly every lot on the catalogue being sold. A general advance of fully Id per pound was obtained for sound well-grown wools of all classes. The highest price realised for greasy Merino was Is l£d, for greasy cross-bred Is, and for scoured Merino Is lOfd. The two men who were arrested by the police on the charge of attempting to rob the Commercial Bank of Australia at Avenal on the 6th instant were committed for trial to-day. October 20. The Railway Construction Bill was finally passed by the Legislative Aesembly last night. The rumors which have been current that a meeting of the members of the Constitutional party has been held with a view to a change of leadership are denied, but the Age reiterates its statement regarding the meeting. Telegrams from the country districts report that rain is urgently necessary. It is raining in Melbourne. Bridget Ryan, wife of Patrick Ryan, who is in custody for horse stealing in New Zealand, bas been arrested for aiding to defraud her husband's creditors. Deposit receipts for £1200 and securities to the amount of £900 have been found in her possession.
