The Board met at 2.30 p.m. PresentMessrs J. I). Ormond (chairman), J. G. Kinross, E. LyndoD, M. R. Miller, J. A. Smith, J. H. Vautier, J. N. Williams, His Worship the Mayor, and Captain Gleadow. CORRESPONDENCE. The following inward correspondence was read: — From the Colonial Secretary's office,

From the Municipal Engineer, asking i for h grant of the land required to form ' an approach to Petaoe bridge, and enl quiring whether the Board would con- , tribute towards the work.—Agreed that s the land be granted, also the use of the : Board's quarry whence to obtain ' material; but, the Board having no funds at its disposal for such purposes, cannot give any financial assistance in carrying out the work. i From the Harbor Master, reporting tbe available depth of water as 12 feet, also that the channel is very narrow and crooked, and shallow towards the western pier. From Mr F. W. Williams, requesting permission to lay a tramway across tbe roadway on the breastwork.—Granted. From tbe Board's engineer, reporting on the dredging works for the month, which had been delayed owing to the insufficiency of the punts. From the same, requesting that regulations be framed for the guidance of persons using tbe two cargo sheds, now completed.—Consideration deferred. , From the Board's solicitor, conveying his opinion respecting Mr M. Kennedy's claim for refund of wharfage dues charged on coals landed here for the use of the Government on the local railway line. From Mr J. H. Vautier, claiming tbe refund of £363 4s 2d under similar circumstances to those on which Mr Kennedy's claim was based. A portion of tbe coal for which refund of the wharfage dues was claimed having, in Mr Vautier's case, been supplied out of his yajd, the matter was, on the motion of Mr Kinross, referred to the Board's solicitor, who was to be empowered to consult with another legal gentleman. FINANCE. The Chairman reported that the total expenditure for the next six months (ordinary and extraordinary) would ' amount to about £4,700, and tbe estimated income to about £3770. Of tbe £6,500 fixed deposit that had become available by effluxion of time during the last month, he had, therefore, deposited £5000 in the bank for six months and paid in £1500 to the current account. The course adopted by the Chairman was approved by the Board. Accounts amounting to £545 Is were passed for payment. EXTENSION OF PIERS. The following estimate (which Mr Kinross had moved for) of carrying out the work recommended by Sir John Coode was laid on the table : — Estimated cost of an extension of the eastern mole 400 feet, and construction of halftide wall 400 feet in length, from the end of western molo. 200 feet east mole, 15 feet wide, sheet piling on both sides, and filled with rubble and £ a. d. shingle 3,296 6 9 200 feet east mole, 30 fceb wide, sheet piling on both sides, and filled with rubble 4,961 2 10 400 feet half-tide rubble wall 1,800 0 0 Total 10,057 9 7 It was pointed out that the estimate was very much lower than that of Sir John Coode. The Chairman said it was no use discussing the matter, seeing that it was not intended to proceed with the work. OYSTER PLANTING. Mr Smith said he had procured some mud ojsters from the South for distribution. He had sent some to Wairoa, and he wished to lay the rest in convenient places in the inner harbor, and for that purpose he would ask permission to use the Board's boat.—Granted.
