THE MELBOURNE CUP.

Tho following graphic enumeration of the horses engaged in the Melbourne Cup has appeared in the Otago Daily Times, and emanated from the pen of a Dunedin consultationist. —Review of the Flying Squadron at Flemington, October, 1882. The following towns will be represented on the occasion : —Bathurst, Creswick, Dunedin, Anglesey, Morpeth, ITereford Bay, Hobart, Essex. Under such auspices, and in such distinguished company, are enrolled as patrons, Lord Burleigh, Lord Clyde, Lord Lisgar, Grand Duchess, King Quail, Bryan O'Lynn, Lady Hampden, King of the Yale, I oid Loftus, The Czar, The Duke, William Frederick, Sir Oliver, His Highness, Baronet, Sir Joseph, The Q.ueen, herstandard Bearer, and Fandango, the Aide-de-Camp—many of whom will arrive by H.M.S. Vanguard, Hesperian, and Bosworth. The performances of the lesser contingent offer a fair field, as a matter of course, for criticism, and the vagaries of such a motley assemblage afford room for much speculation. .Act I. — The Drummer from Waterloo will undoubtedly create a Commotion by inciting The Barber to Grip Bassanio, an enemy of Twelve Years' standing. This Ironmaster attempted by Sunset in company with the Assyrian, Gloster, and Cetawayo, but was repulsee by a Sting he received in Spite of his Prattle, thus leaving him and his cousin Little Jack in a Calma mood, having played np their Ace and won the Odd Trick. Sudden appearances of Salonara the Prima Donna, who causes a Sensation by singing the Canary song from Lohengrin. Act 11. —Jim Tyson, Crazy Jane, f I he Hebrew, and Brunette are discovered at Annandale, seated at an Omelette Supper. The Footstep of Allender is heard, and a Scandal averted, having Transferred themselves to the room of Pollio tho Attache, their friend the Liberator. On Guesswork entering he was Mistaken for Santa Claus by Jessie the cook, who concluded that this Navigator had come as a Saunterer with the object of Piracy. On discovering her Mistake she implores forgivness and presents him with a Crystal, a Little Gem of the First Water, in proof of her sorrow. —Lavinia suddenly appears, and seeing Ericthoneous, her late sculleryman,exclaims, 'You Dare-bin here !' Act 111. —Arrival of the Coreena, with two Wizards and a Waxwork exhibitions on board. Sudden appearance of Kal Kal, Boolka, Paul, Phoreus, and the Mulatto. These brigands, in conjunction with Eva, enveloped in a Flying jib, awaited the appearance of Generals Savnnaka, Wheatear, Martindale, Suwarrow, and Venom, whose bodies were carried off at the point of the bayonet, consigned to the Salvage bank, and afterwards interred by Sardonyx, Cunnamiilla, ISegenhoe and Gudarz. Tremendous excitement! The Brigands arrested by Policemen Nautilus, Sylvanus, Harebell, Stockwell, Eupert, Westbury, Petrel, Prometheus, Proctor, and Euclid. Grand Finale—Escape of the Brigands. Act IV.— Discovers the whole of the conspirators assembled in the ' Trial Scene, , when Winifred appeai-3 with her pet Golden Butterfly, having escaped the pursuit of Grosvenor, Kohinoor, Colstoun, Iris, Gostwich, Bagot, Gardenia, Sweetwilliam, and Hilltop. Closing scene—representing The Bainbow cave near Belmont, in Hecla, near the Cheviot Hills. Final Tableau.—The Judge passing sentence, as the Sqadron pass in array, to the tune of See, the Conquering Heroes come.
