WAIROA.

(prom our own correspondent.) September 30tb, 1882. The County Council has been eminently successful in the action brought against the Mohaka natives for obstructing the public highway leading to the ferry, tbe defendants being mulcted to the tune of close on £20. Mr Albprt, one of the defendants, very innocently remarked that " be obstructed the road to get compensation." It is to be hoped the lessons taught them will not soon be forgotten. Apropos of matters magisterial I may mention that a movement is on foot to get a magistrate for thia district who will be resident in every sense of the word. Many people are prevented from bringing their cases into Court simply because it does not pay them to come twenty miles 01 so, and then find that the R.M. is detained in Napier by bad weather. I am sure Captain Preece will see the matter in this light also.

[ Tbe ball which took place in the County Hall on Thursday night eventuated very successfully. There were about 36 couples present, all of whom thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The proceeds, co far as tbe tickets have come in, amount to over £10. At a public meeting held in Frasertown on Wednesday the following were appointed as trustees for the Frasertown library :—Mrs Nairn, Messrs J. Couper, Fraser, Tunks, Taylor, Brown, and Steel. The declaration for incorporation was attested, and a 6et of bye-laws framed. The ladies' school established by Mrs J. W. Sargisson at " The Parsonage" opens on Monday. I cannot but wish the undertaking every success in the future. The school is situated in an extremely healthy district, the education will be good, the terms reasonable, and parents have this advantage, that their children are not far removed from their control. On Thursday evening last the County Chairman and members of the Council presented to Mr H. J. Williams, county clerk, a handsome timepiece as a mark of esteem, and in recognition of the services rendered by him in the late case of Steele v. the County Council. The gilt (which was privatety subscribed for by the members of the County Council) was acknowledged by the recipient in a few wellchosen words. " Have you seen the comet" is now an almost universal query? This heavenly visitant was observed the morning of the ball by a large number of person, and " early risers"—very few I must say— still declare they have seen the comet, and can now die happy. The cricket season opens Jat Mohaka to-day, and here next Saturday. Tbe business carried on lately by Messrs Gardiner and Taylor, as builders and contractors, &c, has been transferred to the former. We are just now enjoying (?) the equinoctial gales, and the country in consequence is getting somewhat dried up. The proposal for a Town Board is not making much progress, and I think it is not likely to eventuate. Messrs Mayo and Co., are making ex-

tensive alterations in their old auction mart with the view of converting it into a public hall.
