October 6. At the City Court yesterday Louis and Solomon Cohen were charged with selling goods on false pretences. It appears they went to St. Alloysius' College and represented that they had been sent there by Bishop Moran and Mother Superior Gabriel, of Timaru, and on the faith of these and other representations, which proved to be untrue, Father O'Malley
purchased several articles. The Bench considered that there was no case for a jury, and discharged tbe prisoners. The store of Thomas Ambrose, of I Mandeville, was burned down on Tuesday. The store was insured in the South British office for £350. At a meeting of the creditors of David Forsyth, butcher, of Port Chalmers, the liabilities were stated to be £5191, and the assets £2558, partly secured. The National Bank holds a bill of sale to secure £2500.
