NAPIER WORKING MEN'S CLUB.

There was a good attendance of members at the half-yearly meeting of tbe V' above club last evening, Mr Waterworth / presiding. HALF-YEARLY REPORT. The following report from the committee of management was read :— The number of members has largely increased, there being now 10 life members, 18 honorary, and 201 ordinary, good on the books, showing an increase of 54 members during the half-year. Mr Hodgson was elected to fill the office of secretary at a salary of £10 per annum, vacancy being caused by the resignation of Mr J. Wisharfc. Mr Plowman having resigned his seat on the committee in consequence of leaving for a trip to England, Mr C. Leslie was appointed to fill the vacancy. Your committee look back with satisfaction on the entertainments provided during the last half-year under the direction of the entertainment committee (Messrs Briden, Scorg'ie, Simmonds, and Leslie), and con. sider that the thanks of tho members arc due to the committee, also to those gentlemen who gave lectures, readings, &c. Improvements. —The billiard-room has been lined under the supervision of Mr H.C.A. Wundrnm, to whom the committee are much indebted for his valuable services. The room has also been papered and painted, and, by the kindness of Mr Wundrum, is now being tastefully decorated, and when completed your committee feel confident will be in appearance second to none in Napier. The bagatelle-table hasbeen newly covered afc a cost of £3. The section has been filled in by contract at a cost of £15 12s Id. Your committee have arranged for a regular supply at the end of the present month of the following additional papers : — English Mechanic, American Agriculturist, and Australasian Sketcher, which will doubtless prove welcome additions to the . reading-room. Your committee are pleased te be able to express their entiro satisfaction with the efforts of the steward and stewardess for the interests of this institution, and think (if the general meeting approve) that tha incoming committee should consider the advisability of an advance in their salary. The balance-sheet shows the club to be still in a prosperous condition, and in conclusion your committee have every confidence in the success of the institution. FINANCE. The balance-sheet accompanying the report showed a present credit in favor of the club of £66 ls Bd, the value of assets over liabilities being £517 3s 4d. Both the report and balame-sheet were unanimously adopted. THE LOAN SOCIETY. Mr P. Gillespie drew attention to certain matters connected with the loan society, and suggested tbat tbe society Bbould either be discontinued or made entirely distinct from the club, a rent being charged to the committee for the use of the club's room. After an animated discussion on the subject it was resolved that the use of the club room be granted v to the society as heretofore. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. A question arose, in connection with tbe election of officers, as to whether a Burety for the steward could be elected a member of tbe committee. The question was decided in the negative on a vote being taken. The following officers were elected for tbe ensuing half-year:—President, Mr T. W. Bear; treasurer, Mr T. Waterworth ; Committee, Messrs Briden, F. W. Collins, Cowlrick, Gillespie, B. Lee, J. Murray, J. Parker, Simmonds, S. Spence, aud Wundrum. Tbe usual votes of thanks terminated the proceedings.
