THE TOTALISATOR.

[To the Editor of the Dailt Tblbg»APH.] Sib,—ln view of the approaching spring races I wish to make a suggestion in reference to the totalisator. I noticed at the Easter races held at Auckland that the shares or tickets there were £1 and 10s; the latter price gave very general satisfaction. I would now suzgest that the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club committee would give a trial to a 10a totalisator. Try, for instance, one in the paddock outside the grand stand, and I doubt not for a moment but that it would be a great success. In advocating this I merely do so on behalf of a large section of the community, who, I believe, cannot afford to pay the £1, and who are debarred from investing in the old halfcrown sweep which is prohibited under the Gaming and Lotteries Act of 1881. I trust, however, that the stewards and the committee will favorably take into consideration my suggestion, and thereby oblige a large proportion of the racing public.—l am, &c, Pro Bono Publico. September 16, 1882.

[The Gaming and Lotteries Act Amendment Act permits sweepstakes on racecourses and other places of public amusement. —Ed. D.T.]
