September 14. The homeward Australian and New Zealand mails, which left Auckland on August 15, and was being conveyed from .New York in the Guion line steamship Alaska, have been burned, a fire having occurred in the mail rcom aboard that vessel. A number of registered letters were among the mails destroyed. A despatch has been received from General Sir Evelyn Wood, commanding the British garrison at Alexandria, reporting that an officer had arrived at that city bringing a loiter from the
Governor of Kafradowar, in which it was stated that all the military chiefs at that place were willing to submit to the English forces. At to-day's wool sales 7700 bales were offered. Prices were firm for the various lots catalogued, but the demand was not active. Fault) scoured is now somewhat cheaper. September 15, afternoon. _ A despatch has been received from Sir Garnet Wolsley at Benha reporting that General Drury Lowe, at the head of the British cavalry, occupied Cairo yesterday. Arabi and Toulba at once yielded unconditionally, and ten thousand oftheir troops stationed their also submitted. The Prefect of Cairo has undertaken to keep order in the city. Sir Garnet adds that be starts forthwith for Cairo. Later. A further dispatch has been received from Sir Garnet Wolsley reporting his arrival at Cairo, where he was received with open arms by the populace. He further reports that Arabi and Toulba are prisoners in the citadel of Cairo. Sir Garnet adds that war may now be considered over, and that no more troops need be sent. At to-day's wool Bale a fair demand was experienced. The catalogue comprised 10,800 bales; 18,250 bales have been withdrawn from sale since the opening of the series. At to-day's wool auction 11,000 bales were catalogued. The market was steady, but the demand was not active. Scoured wools are dull.
