The machinery for the Canterbury Refrigerating Company arrived by the ship Thome on Monday. Messrs Besberger and Frong'a flour mill at Rangiora had a narrow escape from destruction on Sunday. Flames were seen coming from the roof, when a lad of 13 years named Chester made his way into the building, and dashed a few buckets of water on the roof, quenching the fire for a time. He then gave an alarm. The cause ot the fire was an over-heated chimney. Planting operations on an extensive scale have been carried out this season along the Waimakariri for protective works, including 17,000 willow stakes, 29,650 popular cuttings, 15,600 acorns, 7,965 other trees, 1,100 basket willows, eight acres of wattle seeds, and several acres of wattles and blue gums mixed. The total cost ot these extensive operations has been only £252 10a 6d. A prisoner named O'Connor, undergoing a sentence of four years' penal servitude in Lyttelton gaol, became very insubordinate yesterday morning. He assulted the chief warder and another officer. Some other prisoners also fell out of the ranks, evidently intent upon creating a disturbance, but the whole of the warders being on the spot, having just paraded, tbe disturbance was at once

quelled. The visiting justices having being summoned to attend and hold an enquiry, O'Connor wa9 sentenced to 20 lashes. The would-be rioters were also punished.
